Learning "game" japanese

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Learning "game" japanese

Post by Ivo »

Maybe it is just wishful thinking on my part, but I would like to learn some japanese for gaming purposes one of these days.

Is there any advice that my peers here might want to share?

I mostly learnt the English I know from gaming in my youth (and a few german as well). I only had english in school on the 10th grade (when I was 16 or so) and didn't really learn much more from it, so maybe just starting from the appropriate games can get you a headstart...

i used to work with a french guy who would translate jap menus for me, from what he said and my poor memory i think it is all english anyway, or to be more accurate english spelt with japanese fonetics. So if someone read it aloud you would understand it. I am not sure how true it is, but it did explain why the audio was often in english "player 1 start" etc...

Probably wont help you do it, but an insite into what you are atempting.

well they kinda do. from what i've seen it's a kanji dictionary where you can write part of the kanji and the "game" automatically detects it from a list and then you choose which one it actually is and you'll get a definition as well as the kana (phoenetic characters) for it. cool!

as for learning game japanese, just pick up a big english-japanese (or whichever language you prefer to go from) dictionary at your local book store. i did that during a boring summer before i started high school and i learned how to read all kana, and (very important!:) learned that almost all katakana (the sharper simple characters) are for english words (foreign words actually, but most are from the english language). of course you can learn simple stuff like "north and south", "open and close" also.

SUMMARY: a japanese dictionary is a good start

Heh, I actually started learning Japanese for the SOLE purpose of playing Jp video games. :)
Have you considered taking a class in Japanese?(If there is one offered in your area) Making a friend who is Japanese might help immensly as well. Learning Katakana would be a good place to start too. As Grittykitty said everything written in Katakana is from a foreign language and is most likely english. For instance: Tepurekoda=Tape recorder

...and yeah, getting a dictionary or book would be cool too. I'm reading Japanese For Busy People. It's ok but it mostly covers really polite conversation.

Hey, anybody here remember MUZZY???
