with emulation and compilation disks the way they are these days, you might want to think about getting your neo geo fix on a different system. Just something to consider.
but yeah- something to be said for owning an AES. If you are going to take the plunge into the video game lemon that is the neo geo- i say go big or go home. AES or MVS all the way.
from what i hear, the neogeo cd load times can be quite painful. but as you say....the games are alot cheaper.
good example of the loading here
Atari 2600 Jr., NES, Gameboy, Genesis 1 and 2, Saturn, Virtual Boy, Gameboy Advance (with Supercard SD), Playstation (With Goldfinger), Nintendo 64, Playstation 2(modded), Nintendo DS (Fat) with Edge
Not only are the games a LOT cheaper, but there's virtually no protection from playing burns.
I'm not gonna lie, the loading times are the longest on any console. But, it's really not that bad, especially if you look at it like this: I can get to playing a NGCD game in the same amount of time it takes for a typical PS3 game. Just about every PS3 game I own has several logo screens I need to sit through, and at least one loading screen after that. THEN I have to load the game up. Takes about the same amount of time to load up a NGCD game, so it's not too bad. You're just staring at the load bar a lot longer than you're use to.
Are you interested in the Neo Geo mainly because of Neo Fighter Games? Or is it specifically the Neo Geo System that is drawing you in? Cartridge instant on is definitely a plus.
Another option is (if its just to get some games) is the PS2 compilations, 5 bucks at Toy R Us. Not the real thing, but pretty close. With HDAdvance/HDloader the PS2 can store those compilations on a hard drive. Put Game discs away and enjoy convenience of menu driven fast loading hard drive.
So in terms of AES vs. MVS, as far as I know both can handle carts of any region. If you get an AES you can put a special BIOS on it that will let you boot into whatever region you want (which makes a difference, one of the Samurai Shodowns doesn't have fatalities in the US version, and the flavor text will be in JP or English). Not sure if there's a way to simulate that on the MVS. MVS carts tend to be cheaper, but they're also uglier. Similarly the AES console looks nice on a shelf, while with the MVS you need to work up the Supergun and as a result it just won't look as good; everything homemade stands out next to manufactuered electronics.

After giving it some thought I'm going to save up the huge amount of money to get an AES and a Metal Slug game (possibly my favorite 2D game ever). Ill probably end up importing 4 or 2 as they seem to be the most common.

Be prepared to not sleep for 3 days. Don't forget you need nourishment, not just coffee and Red Bull.
