Anything But Power Point.

Post by Luke »

I'm pitching a huge business proposal next week.
I have everything together, but I do not want to present it using power point. Any recommendations?

Why are you against Powerpoint?

From getting my bachelors to my masters, every presentation, even by the professors has been done in powerpoint.

It sucks the creativity out of the presentation. Of course, the meat of the presentation involves numbers, but for the last six years, it's all been powerpoint.

Power Point is a (pun) powerful tool that 90% of people who use it, use it wrong. It is like people who use a program like RPG maker, and use the resources it comes with, you look at and think, unoriginal, its all about how you use it.

Maybe Front Page
OMG... as a Web Developer...
I'm going to pretend I didn't read that lol

I usually use Open Office Impress.
I recommend this distribution:
http://go-oo.org

I'm sure there are other solutions;
but I'd imagine most use Flash.

EDIT:
I finally found it again;
I used to use MediaCD a lot; for my own software CDs.
The program is robust enough; that I think you could
use it for presentations with great success.

Here is the link:
http://www.botproductions.com/mediacd/index.html

Take a look at the created CD Menu on that page.
It even has features embedded video, and multiple
pages; accessible with the previous and next buttons.

The program is fully customizable and free of charge.

And least I forget; here's a slide show on what is known as 'PowerPoint Poising':
http://www.wiredsafety.org/wiredlearnin ... tm#slide=8

It's the content that counts, and by putting too much information
on the slides, as well as fancy effects, takes the audiences
attention away from you; the presenter.

No matter what software you use; minimalism is key.

And make sure you print everything out on hard copies in case a disaster happens.
It has happened to me, the projector bulb dies; or the computer 'crashes'.

I see what you're saying. Most people just use the same old stuff that's included with the program. I'm especially sick of spinning text effects.

In all my classes at university we use illustrator and design proper slides, then export them as pdfs and present them that way. Powerpoint is not a good way to make presentations.

As to why PowerPoint can suck, here's what the Gettysburg Address would have looked like if it had been done in PowerPoint:

As for providing helpful options, I've seen some people still use powerpoint to transition slides, but they design each slide in photoshop and then just set them to a background image on each powerpoint slide. I think you can overlay animations and stuff like that as well.
