It doesn't take a modding expert anyway, by the way. With a bit of savvy it's not to hard to engineer a control box (for easy access) to make a universal joystick. The idea is basically just a separate PCB for each console and a control box to make it easy to switch back and forth (otherwise the cords sticking out would be a nightmare, not to mention the space needed). It only gets complicated when it comes to PS3 and Xbox 360.
I've always wondered if I could make my Street Fighter Tournament stick into a universal stick... I know there's adapters to make it go from 360 to PS3, but I'm not sure how I could add a control box into the mix. The idea of having a ton of sticks is awful, which says a lot coming from me and my army of novelty controllers.
PS2 -> Sega Genesis controller converters?

Easy hookup, great price too!
Ziggy587s link looks like the most painless and cost effective way.crux wrote:It doesn't take a modding expert anyway, by the way. Its Pretty difficult to set up a separate Plug in Universal box, though is possible with enough encoders inside. There are pre-made ones for PSX, Saturn, Dreamcast, PC, etc. You could custom make one unique to which consoles to support. Instead of a Universal Box, maybe put controller guts of various consoles directly inside that Tournament Stick, a careful meticulous wiring ordeal.

Before the Mod, a plain Zaxxon Arcade Controller.
I Modded a Zaxxon Arcade Controller with extra buttons from HAPP mounted in the base of a Impact Printer plastic Sound Box. To make it work, each button is connected to appropriate pad of circuit board from a gutted controller. Setup for PS1/PS2, PC Keyboard Encoder and 2600. Needless to say the 2600 had the fewest wires to solder up, no separate circuit board gutted out. With so many wires to switch between the three systems, multiple bypass toggle switches were out of the question. Relays would have given problems too because of different voltages of the different systems. Instead I have all buttons first wired into a 40 pin IDE connector routed out the back of the Zaxxon controller. From there, mounted 3 female IDE connectors for 2600, PC Keyboard Encoder and PS1/PS2 board each. At the other end, each System has their unique connector plug. PS1/PS2 Playstation Connector, 9 Pin 2600 plug and a PC Round PS2 Keyboard Connector. I went Non-USB for the keyboard to allow specifically DOS, Win98 and WinXP all to work. For the iMAC simple matter of plugging PC Round PS2 plug into a USB adaptor. To change between systems on the Zaxxon Controller, simply have to plug that IDE cable into the appropiate female IDE slot.
Real happy one of the systems I added is that Sony PS1/PS2 connector. I branch off to Dreamcast with a PS1 to Dreamcast adaptor. There are numerous other PS1 adaptors for a wide range of systems.

The problem with adapters is that the majority of them introduce additional lag into the controls. The average player won't notice, but for those looking for the precision of Seimitsu or Sanwa in the first place, every frame matters.

The direct solder Zaxxon Mod I did has no slowdown, even going through Dreamcast adaptor. At least no lag I can detect, though the Zaxxon Stick isn't the best for fighting games.crux wrote:The problem with adapters is that the majority of them introduce additional lag into the controls. My PS1 Twin Blaze Arcade stick with two players suffers no lag with two Dreamcast adaptors either. I think the electronics inside are a lot quicker to react over a person's movement of the controller. Every slap of the button is instantaneous on Street Fighter and Soul caliber.

The Saturn Tototeks I have experience no lag. Watch my Souky video. I would assume their MD/Genesis models would be similar.crux wrote:The problem with adapters is that the majority of them introduce additional lag into the controls. Re: PS2 -> Sega Genesis controller converters?
Not all adapters have significant lag, of course, but not everyone can notice minute amounts of lag even if they're looking for it. It's mostly frame for frame 2D fighting fanatics and rhythm game fans that would notice (the latter being a non-issue with sticks and typically only an issue with integrating a controller for PC use).
Also, I was speaking about adapters in a universal sense (one stick to control them all!). Fitting a bazillion PCBs in a single stick isn't possible nor feasible anyway (I could literally find uses for a stick for over 20 systems - I have shmups on almost every system!), but expecting adapters to be a solution for every single system isn't likely a feasible solution either for the lag perfectionist (seriously though, 2D fighting fanatics and Bemani fans - no one else should care). Plus I need my sticks to support Xbox 360 from the getgo anyway, since doing it the other way around is virtually impossible.
But yeah, for a console or two, it's definitely easier to try an adapter than go through the hassle of making a control box.

Re: PS2 -> Sega Genesis controller converters?
Anyone interested in working out a group buy on the tototeks? Shipping on one looks like it's going to be around $20 for EMS. A group buy would make things worthwhile. Shipping on 10 of them clocks in @ around $40 for EMS.
