I've been wanting to buy Blue Dragon for the 360 and I've been tempted to get Blue Dragon Plus for the DS. I've heard that Blue Dragon has Sakaguchi directing it, music by Nobuo Uematsu and artwork by Akira Toriyama. All of these are reasons enough for me to buy the games, yet i've never bought it.
Can you guys tell me, in your honest opinion, what you think about Blue Dragon and Blue Dragon Plus?

I really liked Blue Dragon, it was kind of refreshing to have a JRPG go back to basics like it did as in my opinion the genre was becoming a little convoluted. It's Final Fantasy meets Dragon Quest. Try it it's dirt cheap nowadays Lost Odyssey is great too. I'm at the end now just grinding before the boss. It's very dull.

I haven't played Plus; I decided not to get it when I found out that it wasn't the same type of game as Blue Dragon.
I enjoyed Blue Dragon. The character system is similar to FFV's; you have several jobs and as you rank them up you gain abilities, and you eventually can mix and match across jobs to create your uber character. I found that the magic jobs weren't as useful as going for a pure physical team, although the magic was useful in the beginning for dealing with enemy groups. The story is fairly generic but unlike a Final Fantasy game there isn't much in the way of angst. There's a little, but it's mostly a "we can do anything if we try hard enough" kind of vibe. It also has an awesome boss theme, but you need to let it grow on you first.

Oh Yeah! "Fear and awe / in your eyes" - You're going to LOVE it!
Re: What are your thoughts on Blue Dragon?
I'll echo the same sentiments as everyone else - It's unabashedly old school, which for me was a good thing, so if you like that it will probably appeal to you too. The cahracter designs are more "cartoony" (drawn by Toriyama, same guy who did Dragonball/Z, and Chrono Trigger, among other things).
The biggest fault I found was that it was way too easy, so do yourself a favor, and before you buy it, download the hard mode DLC off xbox live (it's free).
Also, don't buy Blue Dragon Plus. Yucky. I was very dissappointed. It's the same kind of game as ff12 revenant wings, which is an RTS type game, and I didn't think either worked very well.
Oh yeah - the boss music is by Ian Gillan, of Deep Purple. Which is...interesting.

Deep Purple meets Black Mages is a total win in my mind.dlmvii wrote:Oh yeah - the boss music is by Ian Gillan, of Deep Purple. Which is...interesting.

I don't mind the "we can do anything if we try" thing. Heck, if I think about it, Gurren Lagann had something similar to that, only cranked up to 11 and mixed with awesomeness. As for the lack of emo, I can only cheer and rejoice since I was starting to get tired of the "emo" stereotype that anime seems to leech ontoMrPopo wrote:The story is fairly generic but unlike a Final Fantasy game there isn't much in the way of angst.
