So thanks to google, I now know you mean the obscure Phillips CD-i Zelda game, "Wand of Gamelon". Seriously, that game does not deserve an acronym.

Don't base your opinion of this game on what you've heard. It's seriously fantastic.

There are plenty of retro games like Zelda 2 that aren't strictly side scrolling rpg's. I'd start with River City Ransom, and ask for more suggestions after you've beaten it (the game).

It's not really a side scrolling rpg either, but The Guardian Legend on nes may be a game you should look into.

Also, Wonder Boy in Monster World.

So if I'm to not base my opinions of this game on what I've heard, and I've just heard from you that the game is seriously fantastic, then I must logically conclude that it sucks.

Skyblazer. Not really an rpg, though, I guess. I definitely second Faxanadu.

Ok, back on topic. Tales of the Abyss (PS2) has side scrolling battles. It's pretty good if you can get past the fact that the main character is obnoxious as hell, which is a huge flaw in an otherwise good RPG.

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (PS2) has a beautiful side-scrolling world to travel through, though your battles are in 3D.

Actraiser is a combo of side scrolling action and overhead god sim. That makes it sort of an RPG, but not quite.

Other recommendations on this thread have been good, such as Faxanadu, Symphony of the Night, River City Ransom, and Odin Sphere.
