I have a suspicion that the video you linked will be their planned 3D tech, though it would be using the accelerometers instead of the camera for positioning. Projective 3D would require some form of eyewear or holograms (and lord knows we can't do holograms). But this creates a very convincing sense of depth without any eyestrain or need for any other hardware.

Will be very interesting to see how will Sony counter this with their next gen PSP.

I also wonder what the price will be for 3DS, as it shouldn't go higher than a PSPgo (granted that iPad is suggested at USD $400), maybe around $179, and it shouldn't cost the same as a Wii, unless the Wii HD is coming soon right after 3DS (along with a rumored revamped Nintendo on-line store).

But of course that does leave a big question for the DSi XL, where does it go from here (at the price of $179)? Is it going to fill a niche market for older gamers?

Everyone I know buying an XL has an original or a lite, and just wants the bigger screens. I think that was the purpose of the XL. That and I paid for mine in full an hour ago...

This has me reconsidering buying an XL after all. I had already given my DSi to a friend in anticipation of buying me the XL, which I want mostly for the larger screen to make things like Korg DS or finicky RPGs a bit easier to poke around in. But if the 3D DS will be here in a year, I think I'll wait, especially considering that I hate the idea of purchased DSiware not transferring between handhelds. That's one point that I deeply hope Nintendo addresses with the 3DS.

Don't be too hopeful though :? Smart people will avoid the first 3DS iteration of course.

It will be a combination of both 3D tracking (using accelerometer like what is seen on several iPhone games) and the 2D+depth that is seen in films like Avatar and the '3D' gaming systems available from nVidia.

There is strong evidence that Nintendo has contracted Sharp to provide the parallax barrierscreens for the 3DS. Parallax barrier is a method of providing depth to a scene by the use of a series of very fine slits allowing each eye to see different pixels. 3D can only be achieved by clever use of both of these technologies (head/motion tracking+2D+depth). '3D Cinema' is not 3D, it is merely 2D+depth.

For a more convincing demo of how head/motion tracking 3D works watch this video.

That is same for me why I'm picking up a DS-i XL since I haven't upgraded since the original DS. I'll get Nintendo 3DS eventually.

Well my question is does it have to be 3D? Like is it an option?

I'm starting to feel like gaming is getting even more gimmicky than it was a second ago. Granted, I love my Wii, but really I don't find that all of these newfangled touch screens and motion controls (and 3D apparently) make my games any more enjoyable.

Boom. I should work for nintendo :D

Edit: I agree with the guy above me. Why cant we gave something simple like a gamecube advance? Does the DS have to be so...experimental?
!
I remember in some interview with a nintendo representative about half a year after the wii launch, and the guy said something like "If the DS didn't sell well, we would have not released the wii"
Perhaps we can see this 3d thingy in the wii 2 if the 3ds sells well?
