I don't usually buy at launch. But sometimes I'm scared a game I want will be rare immediately after its release, so I purchase it early on. This is why I got Persona 4 at launch, Devil Summoner 2 at launch, and Eternal Poison at launch. They also came with fun little bonus items like art books and music CDs that are likely to be lost by the time they hit a shelf at any used game store even remotely resembling a GameStop (aka, where manuals and DVD inserts go to die).
Most recently, I just pre-orderd Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love for similar reasons. I'm afraid it will be impossible to find almost immediately after release, particularly after reading that Nippon Ichi Software (NIS), the company that makes this game and some other underground greats, is not doing so hot financially:

I figure I need to get it while the getting is good, plus it doesn't hurt to give my full price contributions to gaming companies that I like because they actually dare to release games in the West that traditionally would have never seen the light of day in the United States. Normally I don't pay for anything full price. In fact, I routinely scrape the bottom of the bargain barrell for the dirt-cheapest games I can find. I have a large collection for this reason, but I always feel a tad guilty because despite owning a hell of a lot of games, I've actually contributed far more money to the secondary market and nary a penny of my purchases has likely come anywhere near someone that actually made the games I love.
So, what games have you bought at the full suggested retail price recently, and what motivated your decision?

I bought Metroid Prime Trilogy at launch, and I need to pick up Sakura Wars and Fragile, because they will probably sink as well.
*Also, will Sakura Wars be the full $50? I really want to get that as soon as possible.

I try very, very hard not to do this, since I used to have a bad habit of paying full price, then not touching it for months or years later, although like you said, I am afraid some games will be rare after their release.
Although, it seems pretty rare that a game 1 year after it's release will fetch more than MSRP second hand

Re: What games have you bought at launch recently?
Yeah, I tend to buy Atlus games at launch. In fact, I think Demon's Souls Deluxe was the last game I bought Day One.
I also pre-ordered Sakura Wars from RozenQueen so I could get the exclusive hard-back artbook. http://www.rosenqueen.com/product.php?p ... t=0&page=1 Also got BlazBlue on release, thanks to the extra stuff it came with for free, like the soundtrack, tutorials and artbook.
Aside from that, I've tended to avoid buying Day One. Aside from the games that came with pre-order goodies, the last game I bought near release was SF4 - considering I was extremely disappointed with such a sure thing like Street Fighter, I now take nothing for granted. I won't ever be buying a game at launch again unless it comes with enough pre-order bonuses to make it worth it, even if the game is trash. (SSF4 has a pre-order bundle, but it costs $80 for the full package and it is basically just a T-shirt, a Gym Bag and a Sports Bottle. Pathetic.)

The last retail game? Um... Mario Galaxy I think. Bought that the day it came out. Either that or Skate. Whichever came out the latest. Last download title was Perfect Dark, the only other download title I have bought on launch - ever - is Left 4 Dead 2.
I very rarely buy games at launch. They're always overpriced and come down to half price or less within a couple of months. I like being months behind the curve, means that I get my games for lower prices. I never buy a game for more than £30, all of my purchases get made at £25 or less. Considering that almost all our games get released for £39.99 ($60) - 44.99 ($67) on 360, £39.99 on PC (yeah... thanks Activision you fucking bag of dicks) and £44.99 - £49.99 ($75!!) ( for PS3 that's a pretty big saving overall, well worth waiting for.

Last Launch game was Gears of War II Limited Edition to match my Gears I set. I'm really tempted to get Just Cause 2 though.

I buy Nintendo handheld games at launch and occasionally a console or PC game. Reason being, Nintendo handheld games do not drop in price often. The last console game was New Super Mario Bros, before that was Lets Tap (I think).
Re: What games have you bought at launch recently?
I preordered tatsunoko vs capcom and I bought NSMBW 3 days after launch.
Re: What games have you bought at launch recently?
I buy tons of launch titles..... on the same day of a system launch. This has included Xbox360 with call of duty 2..... and a Wii with Zelda TP and Red Steel (i know i know!).

I'll nab some ATLUS games at launch, since I swear their print run is limited to what they can make while the security guard at the videogame factory is away for dinner.
I'll also buy some 1st party Nintendo games because...well, it's not like they'll ever come down in price.
Bargain bin for everything else.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
