Momocon 2010: Hidden Gems Panel

Post by pepharytheworm »

I just got back from helping Fastbilly1 with the Hidden Gems Panel at Momocon. I didn't talk much but tried to fill the gaps whenever I could. Just giving you guys a recap of what we discussed and if you guys were there let us know what you thought. We did have sound issues but did the best with what we had 8). It was a full house with some sitting on the floor, we even went over an extra 30 minutes. The next panel was none too happy about that. Sorry no pics, my camera died.

Games discussed:
NES/Famicom
Import: Binary Land - Puzzle. The girls in the audience thought this game was cute and people enjoyed the classical music.
Import 2: Recca 92 - Shmups. This was the first one to really wow the audience with its fast gameplay and steep price.
Domestic: Guardian Legend - shmups/action adventure. This seemed to get a lukewarm response but people did mention that they enjoyed the game. At least one said he would buy it that day :D

Genesis/Megadrive:
Import: Darxide - behind view shooter. Some seemed interested but one pointed out are we going to just see a bunch of shooters. People were shocked by the $1400 price tag.
Domestic: General Chaos - Arcade RTS. I thought more would have recognized this game. It turned into a Chuck Norris converstation after Fast said one of the characters looked like him.

SNES:
Import: Battle Cross - Racer/battle. The fact that this was a 5 player game and the fast bomberman/mariokartness seemed to spark interest with the crowd, who laughed at some of the cut scenes.
Domestic: Cybernator - run-n-gun/shooter. Fast let me take the lead on this one. Some seemed to remember this game, but said I wasn't that good since I mentioned it can get pretty tough. The crowd seemed shooked when I mentioned the suicide scene that was in the jp version.

PSX:
Import: Vib Ribbon - Rythem. People liked the simple cuteness of the game and the fact that you can add your own music to play the game to, but it would have been better if there weren't sound issues. Got a little giggle when I mentioned not to try the game with Slayer's Angel of Death as it was too hard.
Domestic: Team Buddies - RTS hybrid. People liked the look but not the price. Concept seemed fine to the audience but some thought it seemed kinda kiddie no matter what we said. :?

N64:
Import: Sin and Punishment - On-rails shooter. Most seemed to know this one and we ended up talking some about the Wii sequel.
Domestic: Body Harvest - action/shooter. People seemed to enjoy this game. But of course the killing of pedestrians enticed them more than the killing aliens and the different time periods. I blame GTA

Saturn:
Import: Bulk Slash - Mech action. The gameplay seemed to get some attention, them comparing it to Robotech. The anime look also intrigued a lot. I wonder why  3D Graphics not so much.
Domestic: Three Dirty Dwarves - beat-em-up. I saw a lot of interest in this title with lots of questions asked, they were disappointed we didn't have clips of the 1st boss battle after hyping it up.

Dreamcast:
Import: Real Sound: Kaze No Regret - sound adventure. It was really hard to show this game since it is mostly sound. I think we depressed some of the audience with the sad premise of this game.
Domestic: Typing of the Dead -edutainment. Now out of all the games this one got the biggest response. After showing this game the crowd was loud for the rest of the show, with us having to speak up.

PS2:
Import: Hokuto No Ken - 2D fighter. This one also got a big response, again I wonder why  . I wish both Fast and I had more personal experience with this game because there was a lot of interest in the gameplay mechanics.
Domestic: The Red Star - beat-em-up shooter. I thought this being based on a graphic novel would have enticed the crowd, but a good portion knew of this game already.

Xbox:
Import: Metal Wolf Chaos- 3rd person shooter. The crowd loved this game but we were pressed for time so we quickly did the last few.
Domestic: Panzer Dragoon Orta - on-rails shooter. Some seemed to know this gem, and some looked interested. I thought it was funny one audience member was arguing with Fast on why this wasn't obscure.

Gamecube:
Import: Kururin Squash!- action puzzler. This one went by quick and I don't think a lot of people really got the great gameplay. Wish we had more time on this one.
Domestic: Odama- RTS pinball. Now I was truly shocked that people haven't heard of this gem. A lot of people were very interested, I would say it seemed to be the third most popular game we discussed/showed. And was a good way to end on a high note. I have a feeling a lot of people are going to buy all of the Atlanta area's Gamestop copies of this game.

The next panel started coming in so we had to close out fast. Overall I think the crowd was pleased. I had quite a lot of fun and if I help in future maybe I will be able to get out more words, which I might add wasn't all Fast's fault  They don't call him Fast for nothing.

So in a nutshell that's what you missed. Fastbilly1, feel free to add or correct me, and all the other members that were there also.

WOW! Way to go, a good showing of Retro systems. I like the fact that Dreamcast Typing and Gamecube Odama really showed unknown great Hidden game Gems on Retro Sytems. Keeps the older consoles alive.

Sorry VIB Ribbon didn't work out to show its full potential.

Thanks for sharing!

Sounds like it was great. I'm sorry I couldn't attend. But you guys suck for presenting Odama. Now I'm going to have a harder time finding it, and it was high on my list of Gamecube games to buy after Lent.

I bought that game after your recommendation in the last thread and it arrived from Japan yesterday just 5 days after it shipped! Unfortunately, I forgot that my tv only goes to channel 69 and I can't play it :( .

Hook a vcr to your TV and your Famicom to your vcr. Keep your TV on channel 3 and change channels with your vcr. Most go up to the 100s.

Nice job guys! This was a great idea for a panel to build up some interest for these great games that often get overlooked. 8)

Can't reprogram default channels with NES hooked up and turned on? If you are missing the original remote, maybe a ten dollar universal replacement remote from Wallymart? Channel should be on 2 , 3 or maybe 4.

Ive got most of the domestic hidden gems on the list which rocks. There was one I didn't have and thats Odama for the GC. But I have already remedied that by purchasing it on ebay for $5 shipped! Thanks for showing me this hidden gem!
