What's with the sexism and homophobia lately?

I've not noticed any of this really myself aside from occasional language that seemed to be just mocking usual console fanboy flames or teh usual web babble of the stupid. I'm pretty sure I used the term 'gay' but in context I'd hope it was perceived as a goof. if I remember right it was in the thread about rude players online, and as I mentioned, in context I can't see it as offending any actual homosexuals.

I have no issues with gay people, and I don't ever use the N word. or the B word here anyway. at work I often yell out YOU WHORE !! or FUCKING BITCH !! but I work in a metal shop and your a total weirdo if you don't pepper your language with homoerotic jesting and general foul language.
example: co worker "where's my damn screwdriver !
me: I left it in your PRISON WALLET !
me, lifting heavy object with co worker: oh GOD !! my PUSSY HURTS ! you didn't say it would HURT !!

can we pull up some quotes of actual homophobic and racist (against any race) speech here ? not to point fingers but just to establish that it's actually happening ?

I'm not down with any actual gay bashing or racist/sexist attitudes but at the same time asking people to use language without some personality and a little spice can be pretty boring, and create a false picture of what people actually are in RL.

overall I find the attitude here pretty open and helpful and friendly.

That's the problem. It's very much homophobic regardless of your intentions. My using 'fag', 'gay', 'queer' in a negative context you are in turn referencing to homosexuality in a negative way.

Dsheinem didn't start this thread to start a semantics debate. I'm positive we have a "why is cursing bad" thread already. I could be wrong, but I think what he is saying is, cut out the lame sexist jokes, stop referring to every other thing as "gay" and "faggy", and overall, just try to show some class.

I completely agree. Its on thing to speak a certain way in front of friends who know what your real intentions are, but to speak like that in front of a community of people you don't know shows a lack of consideration. After all you wouldn't be in the middle restaurant, party, or class and yell out obscenities for the same reason. Show some restraint and pick some other words to get your point across.
