emulation online multiplayer

Post by Capcomwarrior »

Could I get some opinions on what is the best method to play emulated games multiplayer online? I am mostly interested in pre-n64/psx era 2d stuff, like fighting games. I know some of the emulators have online play, so I wondered who has had the most success with which ones. I also wondered if there are any servers that allow matchmaking of various platforms and games, like winkawaks, mame, Neoragex, etc.

I want to be able to play games with/against my brother across the state, but random matches/coop would be great too.

a few forum members and I were trying to do this with ZSNES and Fusion a while back when we were chatting at racketboy IRC. We had no luck with the emulation connection at all. We were planning to play NBA Jam and beat the crap out of each other.

I was able to do this with some of the Xbox emulators, but it was entirely too slow. My opponent was on the other side of the country though.

I've played NHL 94 through the internet on some Genesis Emu I can't remember the name of. My little brother and I had the idea one day and made it happen that night. We stayed up all night playing together and almost beat Gunstar Heroes but it froze near the end. I'm not sure which software we used but it worked fine for the most part.

Try Kaillera? Or you can use Hamachi to set up a virtual LAN. It's all about ping though. You have to test the connection between your brother and your end.

I think that's the one we used! Go for that - worked good but yeah, had some ping issues to work out.

the only good online multiplayer I've used is Supercade.net for MAME games. It's actually pretty damn sweet if you like Arcade games (and if you don't like arcade games...I hate you).

The only time I've ever got networked multiplayer to work properly was on zsnes on a LAN years and years ago when I was at college. I should hope that things have improved over the years.

Hamachi is great for stuff like this, I think...
You can join a channel, and it makes your computer think that everyone is connected behind the same router, so you don't have to worry about port forwarding or such that you normally would. You can just connect to someone using their hamachi IP, and it will work just as if you were on a LAN.
