Vapourware

Post by Incognito D »

Cancelled games have a certain mystique. What would they have been like? We will never know. I think this is why they capture my imagination, anyway. They're kind of like lost treasures.
So how about a thread dedicated to the games that we will never have the chance to play?

I'll start off:

Ultimate Soccer Manager 2000 (PC) - Very niche, but me and my brothers played the death out of the '98 version. A 2000 version was being worked on and a screenshot and the box art were released but supposedly Sierra grew impatient with the studio developing the game and pulled the plug. I even emailed some of the people that were working on the game recently and received a couple of replies, but no real answers.

WWF Backlash (N64) - I'm a big fan of the AKI wrestling games on N64 (e.g WCW/NWO Revenge, WWF No Mercy). After releasing No Mercy, a game called Backlash was in the works and was meant to be 20% complete but after hearing that the N64 was to be discontinued the game was scrapped. What a shame. No Mercy came out for Christmas 2000 so if Backlash had been out in time for Christmas 2001 I think it would still have been worthwhile and sold well since the Gamecube wasn't coming out for 9 months in the USA and over a year in Europe. A couple of screenshots are meant to exist in magazines somewhere...

I'll be the first to add Duke Nukem Forever to this list. We all know how great it could have been.

Half Life for Dreamcast: there is a way to find this game stripped of the multiplayer functionality online as an iso... but I wonder how it would have been realized as a final product. The gameplay is great even on the dreamcast, and I'll bet even better so with the mouse and keyboard.
Got: Atari 2600, Atari 7800Pro, Commodore 64, Odyssey 2, Sega Master System, NES, Genesis Models 1-3, Nomad, Game Gear, Sega CD Model 1, Sega 32x, SuperNES, GameBoys, GameBoy Pocket, GBC, Sega Saturn Model 2, GBA, Nintendo 64, Playstation, Sega Dreamcast, Playstation 2 Slim, Nintendo DS Lite, Xbox 360, Gamecube, PS3 Slim

N64 version of Final Fantasy VII.

The early character models for the N64 looked great, even better than the Playstation ones . It was part of what got me excited to buy a Nintendo 64 and part of what convinced me to buy the N64 near launch. I was disappointed when they went the Playstation route, although in hindsight, that was probably the best thing for them to do.

Ohh DC Half-life...

I remember putting down a pre-order on it as soon as possible, and waiting endlessly only for it to be cancelled after pushing it back a thousand times.

This is one game I always wondered "what if" about. That and the other canned games that were to be on the N64 DD system. And for the games that got made into regular N64 carts, I wonder how different they would have been on the N64 DD system. Super Mario 64 2 is worth mentioning.

I had good times managing Man Utd in USM98 but that was the last year for any personal sort of sports enthusiasm. But is vapourware still considered that after being confirmed cancelled? Anyway here's some of what I was once looking forward to

Oh yeah, that reminds me, there was an Earthbound 64 planned for the N64DD.

That would have been an interesting game. I wonder how successfully Earthbound could have made the transition to 3D.

Well they made Mother 3 for the GBA, but still, I wonder what it'd be like on the 64DD system.

I'll also add Duke Nukem Forever. I was hoping that it would be like Prey. Prey was originally thought to be canceled but it came out seven years later.
