I wasn't a big fan of Shadow Complex either - finished it, but only because I felt I had to, being that you can't trade in DLC. Technically impressive, but the story (which was supposed to be good, as they got a 'real' author in) was totally boring.

Big love for the following XBLA titles;

SSF2THDR
Portal
Braid
Ikaruga
Trigger Heart Excelsia
Rez HD
and to a lesser extent Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers

NOT big love for 1942 Joint Strike - it didn't feel like a SHMUP - health bars make it too hard to die... I want to be punished for being shit!

Some magazines/sites even lauding it as the best game on XBLA, i'm-sorry-what-come-again? When SOTN is sat there, on the same damn service which is hands down a better game on every single point?

Regarding Shmups, there isn't that many on XBLA unfortunately. Ikaruga, Trigger Heart Exelica, R-type Dimensions, Geometry Wars 1 & 2, 1942 aaaand that's about your lot for the western XBLA (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong). I'm sure there are more available on Japanese XBLA though.

If Shatter ever comes to XBLA then you should definitely get that, it's a cross between arkanoid and a shmup.

Thanks I think that's quite enough shooters for 4200 points to tide me over.
Hopefully my purchasing the games might encourage more shooters to be released here in the west :P

Don't bank on it! We're too dumb, or culturally inept to truly understand the point of shmups and their affect on Japanese socio-economic climates.

Been Playing XBLA Games

Post by msimplay »

Previously Bought
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix

Bought Today

Outrun Online
Castle Crashers
R-Type Dimensions
Trigger Heart Exelica
Johnny Platform's Biscuit Romp ( Indie Game )
Shoot 1UP (Indie Game)

Downloaded and probably will buy later
Splosian Man
Arkedo Series - 03 PIXEL! ( Indie Game )
MotorHEAT ( Indie Game )
Soulcaster ( Indie Game ) - Not sure on this one seems kinda hard
Tobe's Vertical Adventure ( Indie Game )
N+
Braid
Jetpac Refuelled

Nearly Bought

Square Off ( Indie Game ) - Reminded me of Asteroids slightly and I realised I probably won't play it again. Did like the art style though
Kaleidoscope ( Indie Game ) - Game was ok but I didn't really see myself playing it again.
Platypus ( Indie Game ) - Not worth 400 points and weapon upgrades have limited time use
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 - Got PS2 and Dreamcast version and I hate the damn music
Ikaruga - Already got on Dreamcast and Gamecube
Castlevania Symphony of the Night.- Already got on Playstation and Sega Saturn.
Supercow ( Indie Game ) - Nice graphics but I got bored of it quite quickly and while I only played 3 levels it weirdly had no power ups.
Twin Blades ( Indie Game ) - Nice graphics but reminded me too much of them flash games you can play for free
Pixel Man - Too Simple
Crescendo Symphony - Kind of okay shooter but no powerups and kind of unforgiving
Pac-Man C.E - Already got as part of the XBLA live pack with the Xbox 360 Arcade
PUZZLE BOBBLE Live! - Love Puzzle Bobble but I already got loads of versions of it including the wiiware game
BUBBLE BOBBLE Neo! - Love it but already played many different versions of it to death so probably won't end up playing it
Puzzle Fighter HD - Again I love this but played it so much back in the old Sega Saturn and PS1 days probably hard to come back to might get it for two player though later
Virtual-On OT - Like it but don't think I'd be playing this game much so waste of points if I bought it now

Did not Like
Arkedo Series - 01 JUMP! ( Indie Game ) - Can't kill your enemies I liked the graphics style though
Geometry Wars - Was never a fan of Asteroids and this is a souped of Asteroids clone
Shadow Complex - Lacked the Atmosphere of the game it was supposed to emulate.
Rez HD - Never really knew what the fuss was about and still don't
GANBARE NATSUKI SAN ( Indie Game ) - More Puzzle than platform nice graphics though
URA KAITEN PATISSIER ( Indie Game ) - More Puzzle than platform nice graphics similar to GANBARE NATSUKI SAN
KAITEN PATISSIER ( Indie Game ) - More Puzzle than platform nice graphics similar to GANBARE NATSUKI SAN
Alien Hominid HD - Games just too hard for me I probably won't play it
1942 - The game is made up of 20 different shades of brown other than that feels like clone of the previous games.
QIX++ - Qix is Qix never liked it still don't :P

Try Chime. Trust me. It seems to be completely looked over by so many people. The game is wonderful. More musical version of Lumines, as in your actions and the way you play the game affects the music, whereas Lumines doesn't really do that.

I recommend 3D Infinity (400msp) and Prismatic Solid (80msp). Both are great looking indie shmups

Prismatic Solid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvAxxH8IUes

Bumping this topic since it's been over a year and as a new xbox 360 slim owner, I'm interested to know if anyone has any new/more recommendations to add to this thread.

I do like that a demo usually exists for every game so you can't beat trying it before buying it.

One game that I found intriguing was "Limbo". I also tried "The Impossible Game" and while it was neat, I think I'll pass on it.

Trouble Witches Neo
Rez HD

Those are my favorites on xbla. There are plenty of other good ones, but I find both of those superior to their original release.
My B/S/T thread! :)
