Shenmue general speculation thread (spoilers!)

Since we seem to have a decent number of Shenmue fans on the board and since we'll probably never get to play the 3rd game I thought it could be a good idea to try and figure out what's going on in the story together.

So anyway, I should probably start it off...

Lan Di killed Iwao as he believed that Iwao killed his father (Sun Ming Zhao). Is this really the case? Ryo's dad seemed like a good guy, not a murderer. Furthermore, we found that picture in Ryo's basement of Iwao and Sun Ming at Bailu Village and they look like good friends.
I wonder what happened for one of them to end up dead and for Iwao to take the mirrors back to Japan? Maybe Iwao killed Sun Ming and stole the mirrors, but I don't think it's too likely personally.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and speculate I'll be playing Shenmue 3 on an next-next-gen SEGA console. Probably will end up giving me arthritis.

Kind of difficult to speculate on the story line. It seems as soon as you really get to know a character, yes even the hot dog guy, you say a good bye and leave to another city. Who knows, Lan-Di could even be a red herring for all we know.

Imagine Sega starting an online fundraiser for a Shenmue 3, that'll test the mettle of those fabled millions of Shenmue fans. If every fan gave away $10 the game will become a possibility, especially since no new engine has to be devised for it.

Yeah I was thinking along these lines. For him to believe that Iwao killed his father (if we assume that to be untrue) someone would have had to make him believe that was the truth.
I think this could point to a big bad guy above Lan Di like the Emperor in Star Wars was to Vader.

What about Xiuying's brother? We know he ran away from home as a child to avange his parents' death but what became of him? I sometimes wonder if he is Lan Di.
When Ryo mentioned Lan Di's name to Xiuying she had heard of him and flatly told Ryo that if he fought Lan Di he would be killed. How does she know of him?
The only thing that kills this theory is that Lan Di's real name is Long Sun Zhao so he doesn't appear to be related to Xiuying, but I thought it was a cool theory anyway

Wasn't there also something about the fountain of youth and a white leaf that was still alive?

now that you mention it, I remember finding that bottle of fountain of youth water in the basement, and also the white leaf. I think the white leaf crops up again in the second game but I'm not sure.
I wonder what it could all be about anyway...
