Well, I don't have any experience with the X'eye, but the CDX is pretty damn awesome. Since both can be used with the 32X, I don't really know that one has a distinct advantage over the other, although the CDX can be used as a portable CD player if that interests you at all.

I would lean towards the CDX even if I didn't have one, just because it's actually made by Sega and is quite possibly the coolest looking console ever made. Price might be the bigger issue here, though.

As a side note, CDXs apparently have somewhat weak lasers making the reading of CD-Rs problematic, so if you intend to play Sega CD backups, that could be a factor to consider.

I would really like to get a CDX because of the size of it. The Sega CD is a pain in the ass to use because it's so huge. Often times I don't even wanna bother with it because it's so big, and that's the main reason I'd like to get a CDX. The JVC X'eye is pretty big too, no?

But hearing that the CDX has a weak laser makes me weary of getting one, especially because they cost a pretty penny.

I own both and ask how much of a difference does audio clarity matter to you? If yes than you have to get the x'eye it's much better. Not quite at the level of a Gen1&CD1 though. If space for another console is important grab a cdx. If you want to grab a game & system to take to a friends house the cdx is better.

You won't go wrong with either, unless your slightly anal about audio.

Hey, I own a CDX!

As for "backups" - I've had no problem with them so far - anything I've thrown at it works. However, I don't know about it degrading the laser's life, as I don't play it that often...
As for video quality - it supports S-video out...

I love the small size of my CDX. If I could choose any version I'd pick a Model one Wondermega. Those things look awesome!

Go with a Pioneer laser active with a sega module. It takes up a lot of space in a entertainment center but it is boss. Mine was a gift from my gf (she got it off craigslist). Shipping would be a bitch for it though. So for you go with a cdx.

Yeah, I really wish I could get a laseractive they go for decent prices on eBay sometimes but they are super expensive to get the Genesis adapter for them :-/

I am probably gonna go with the CDX with a 32x attachment it seems like it'll save space and be cool looking.

The CDX does look cool by itself. Not so much with a 32X stacked on top. It looks top heavy that way.

Call me crazy, but I don't think a 32x is worth the hassle. It has a small library (some of which are just upgrades), it takes an additional ac adapter, and it isn't that much better the genesis. I would just buy more games. If I found a CIB one locally for a decent price, I would be more inclined. But still only if I had the cash.
