Well, my searching reveals that we had a best music of the last decade thread, but not a best of the year thread.
Here's a few of my favorites of '09.
1. Tori Amos: "Abnormally Attracted to Sin"
I got a chance to talk with Tori Amos on this tour. She's very gracious about giving some time to her fans for a chat. Her live show was great, as usual. She's really a remarkable live performer.
Standout Track: "Give"
2. Two Fingers: "Two Fingers"
This is Amon Tobin and Doubleclick with MC Sway. The beats are great and so are the rhymes. Definitely a different vibe for hip hop too.
Standout Track: "That Girl"
3. Goldie: "Sine Tempus"
Goldie's always been one of my favorites and I've been looking forward to this album for a long time. It didn't quite live up to the hype of such a long wait, but how could it. Still, quite good though.
Standout Track: "Letting Go"
4. Imogen Heap: "Ellipse"
This album was a bit hit and miss. The album doesn't come together as a whole, but the songs that are good are really good.
Standout Track: "Aha!"
5. Venetian Snares: "Horsey Noises"
A decent EP, but made extra special by this line: "I've made you a drawing of a giraffe fucking an elephant. Notice how his moustache looks just like mine." Hahaha! I'm glad Aaron Funk keeps a sense of humor.
Standout Track: "Horsey Noisers"

Re: Best/personal favorite albums of 2009
An underground trend big with my Daughter, her cousin and some friends.
They bought an LP player, New records from a local music trader and are listening to 70s, 80s music. A New repress of an old Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan album, I didn't know you could still buy these! Keeps borrowing my CDs Flock of Seagulls, Oingo Boigo, Pink Floyd, Thompson Twins, B-52s, etc. Too cool, Daughter and Dad likes same music, how weird is that? That wood Licorice Pizza Crate (Anyone remember that S. CA store) of 12" extended cuts will be part of her inheritance.

1. Ensiferum - From Afar
2. Skeletonwitch - Breathing the Fire
3. Powerwolf - Bible of the Beast
4. Finsterforst - ...zum Tode hin
Those are the only really good albums I can think of from last year. I've had the pleasure of seeing both Ensiferum and Skeletonwitch live, but it's unfortunately unlikely Powerwolf or Finsterforst will come to America anytime soon.

Interpol with...
Nothing.
NOTHING.
They better hurry up. Last one wasn't that grate. (I'm punny)
Nonetheless, OkGo's one that came out was great (warning - big departure from previous work).

I really liked Them Crooked Vultures & Wolfmother Cosmic Egg.

I concur - Cosmic Egg was great. How did I forget?

Re: Best/personal favorite albums of 2009
Apparently I only picked up 5 2009 releases last year. I've been getting slightly older things and grabbing some OOP stuff recently. So I'll go with three 2009 releases I got that were excellent in no order.
Revco - Sex-O Olympic-O
After lots of disappointing stuff since the early 90s, its good to have them making dumb catchy songs again. Nothing wrong with the crunchy guitar angle versus the old dance-y one either.
Keys to the City
Cousins
Tim Exile - Listening Tree
Lovely IDM album.
Fortress
Family Galaxy (hooray for odd time signatures)
The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die
Good album after the disappointing 'Outgunned'. Yes its a return to an old school sound and doesn't really do anything new, but its finely crafted and very enjoyable.
Warrior's Dance
Thunder
I need to step up and catch up some more Venetian Snares too.

A sequel to his classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... (1995). About 3 years in the making from 2005-2008 with the LP being delayed over and over again, people were skeptical about what to except. But Raekwon doesn't disappoint with this album because it is a pure masterpiece.

Man, sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world that liked Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned. OK, the whole album wasn't great, but Memphis Bells is one of my favorite Prodigy tracks of all time. Its are rare treat to hear a song that rocks that hard in 6/8 time. Spitfire and Girls were also very worthwhile. The album just kind of peters out after those first three tracks.Hobie-wan wrote: The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

I like Spitfire, but its all went downhill quickly after that track for me.J T wrote: Man, sometimes I think I'm the only person in the world that liked Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned.
