End all Free MCBoot thread
OK, roll call, who has put this on their memory card themselves?
I've been looking at the Free MCBoot website, but most of the cheat devices are 50 god damn dollars because people have been buying them up for Free MCBoot. I don't mind spending $20-$30 to get this done, but if I'm going to buy something, I want to buy the best method with the highest success rate. Has anyone done it with the Magic Swap disc method? I've modded systems for use with Magic Swap before, so I figure if I can't get MCBoot to work, I can at least play the games with a swap disc until I figure out what I was doing wrong.
My main requirements are:
-the disc isn't outrageously rare and expensive (should I lose the disc, I want to be able to get another if I want to install it again)
-the method is straightforward and doesn't involve special software on the computer if possible (who knows what kind of incompatibilities I might encounter should I try this years from now with the current version of Windows)
-it will work on any type of PS2, slim or fat.

Re: End all Free MCBoot thread
This is probably not the answer you're looking for but the cheapest way to get Free McBoot is to find an installer who will do it for no charge (other than you pay for shipping, about $3 total). There's a list of installers on psx-scene.com & probably sksapps.com. I've done installations for about 8 racketboy members thus far. I don't mind doing it because it takes about 3-4 minutes of my time.
Here's what I've sent to people who I installed FreeMcBoot for:
Free McBoot takes about 1/3 of your memory card space so you can still use it for your saves. If you're really hurting for space, you can always run a program to transfer your saves off the memory card.

I suggest that when you get it, put it in your PS2 and verify that Free McBoot boots up. Then, you should make a second McBoot card. You'll need a USB memory stick. Get the noobie package from here:
http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/noobie.php
Unzip/rar it and put it on your memory stick. There should be a directory named INSTALL with the stuff in it. The FreeMcBoot.elf file should be in the root of the USB stick.
So when you power your PS2 on with Free McBoot, choose uLaunch which brings up a crappy looking file browser. Browse to the memory stick which should be mass0:/ or something like that. Look for the freemcboot.elf (sp?) and launch it. This will run the install program on your memory stick. Then just choose normal installation and put your new memory card in slot 2 and install. After a couple of minutes, you're done!
Easy as pie.
The only issue is that the installer program has to be for the same region. In other words, you can't create a Free MCBoot on a US console for a European console. If you want to make a Free McBoot card for someone else, choose the Multiversion Install.

Re: End all Free MCBoot thread
Thanks for the offer, and I know getting someone to do it for me is easiest, but I'm a very strong advocate of "teach a man to fish" vs. "give a man a fish." I want to do this myself from scratch, even if it costs me an extra $20-$30 just like I did when I modded my XBOX when I bought an Action Replay instead of having someone just put the files on my memory card for me. I want to know that if my memory card gets lost/stolen/corrupted I can still make one myself (I guess someone could steal my action replay/codebreaker/magicswap as well, but that's another story). This is sort of the same as me keeping a PSP pandora battery swapper (changes official batteries to pandora mode) and a dedicated magic memory stick rather than just hoping someone around me can unbrick my PSP if it ever bricks.
Re: End all Free MCBoot thread
lol i can do this, haha. and TO do it all you need is an empty MC OR an mc and a pen drive
the hack DOES NOT work on the last slim (lego batman).

I also rent and sell PS2, Wii and XBOX softmod-kits and I collect DVD movies let me know what you have.

Re: FreeVast is now working for all PS2's
yeah Niode, this is very helpful, WTF is FreeVast? The last post in here is from 2009, yeah, that's up to date.
So all of the beggers looking for someone to install Free MCBoot keep their threads unlocked but I try to learn how to do it and get shut down and directed to this clusterfuck!?
Shit, if this is your idea of "helpful", I guess I'll just figure this out on my own, as usual (thanks internet, I help you out and then you lock my threads when I ask for help in return)

Re: FreeVast is now working for all PS2's
No need to bitch at the mods. Just carry on our previous conversation.
I'm not sure how it is different from Code Breaker/Action Replay. For both, you have to get it from somebody. With both, once you get it, you own it forever unless it is damaged. Once you get your own Free McBoot card, just make another one (I highly recommend it) using Free McBoot itself. If you're really paranoid, make 3-4 cards. Put one in the safe deposit box, another one over at Grandma's, another at work, etc. If your Code Breaker is damaged, you're hosed. There's no way to make another backup copy unless you have a modchip. Free McBoot is different from the Xbox softmod because you have the actual softmod tool. With the xbox, it's tied to the console. With FreeMcBoot, you can take your memory card and put it in any PS2 that has the memory card exploit.
It's sort of like friendship bread. You just need someone to get you started but then you're on your own.

Re: FreeVast is now working for all PS2's
a valid point. Do you know of good and cheap PS2 memory cards? I'm kinda thinkin of pickin up that 128MB memory card from DealExtreme to back up my saves and then dedicate 2 of my cards to Free MCBoot (one to keep with me, one to archive). Here's the other dilemma, though: Free MCBoot vs. Magic Swap. It takes almost nothing for me to mod a slim (I came up with my own lid switch bypass method that just takes a couple minutes and a soldering iron) for Magic Swap use and Magic Swap can run straight ISOs (as far as I know). On the other hand, MCBoot requires everything to be patched. Ideally, I'd like to get something that would let me write straight to the memory card, specifically a PS2->PS3 memory card adapter, but as far as I know, they haven't been hacked to let you interface with a PC yet. I guess the main thing is I could corrupt/erase a memory card but you can't really do that with a Magic Swap disc (which I could use to make a MCBoot card as well). You can't overwrite a pressed disc.

No, you made a new thread for something we already have a thread for. For your information Freemcboot used to be called freevast. If you don't like how we keep this forum organised then maybe you should try somewhere else. I'm just doing my job and trying to keep relevant information in one place rather than scattered all over the shop.

I think it would've been better to let this old, outdated thread die to start a new, current thread. Hard and Soft mods change almost as fast as PC technology, what was relevant 2 years ago is complete gibberish today. Now, everyone is just going to be confused as hell unless they realize only the last couple posts have anything to do with current releases of Free MCBoot. If anything, this thread should just be erased completely to prevent confusion and the new thread I started get unlocked.
