In the video game, the random trainers you face are just repeating trainer archetypes; eg: "bug catcher," "electrician," "hiker." So in the beginning, they should let you choose, among several different trainer archetypes, what kind of trainer you want to be.

And then depending on what archetype you choose, your Pokemon get certain stat boosts or penalties. For example, if you want to be a "karate guy," fighting moves and physical attack get a boost, but special attack gets a penalty. If you're a "pokemon breeder," all your pokemon get an HP and Special Defense boost.

Of course, in case you decide your archetype sucks, you should be able to change it in-game. Have some kind of "career consulting center" in every Poke-town, where you can talk to a guy to change your archetype.

I just find it strange that in Pokemon, so much is customizable, but you can't customize your in-game avatar beyond gender.
Wavelength here I guess. A few friends and I determined every potential trainer class and the benefits it would incur. We decided that to gain classes you had to do certain things (like fight, gather items, etc.), and to avoid rapid changing you could only change once per day. My friend still may have the list, but if I remember Hiker was pretty broken, since we decided he could use Rock Climb without an HM, had EXP bonuses when using rock and ground types, and access to hiker networks to get items like stones.

You know what the most broken class is going to be? Dragon master.

That's got to be some kind of prestige class that only the really hard core can attain. The requirement has to be something ridiculous like hatching a shiny Dratini and/or raising it to level 100.

Something isn't broken if it's that hard to get IMO. It's when you get something powerful at an early level that it becomes broken.

That all sounds like it would be something that they could impliment if they ever made a Pokemon MMORPG. (we can only dream, right?)

A Pokemon MMORPG would be an amalgam of two of the most addictive things in video gaming. I wouldn't stand a chance against that.

I gotta beat Pearl before I buy Gold again. But when I get it Miltank/Mareep will ride again. I wish more of my local friends werent so against the series for foolish reasons. I would love to do something similar to what DaGamingMonkey did here:

picked up Heart Gold. Really enjoying it. Damn does this bring back memories of me and all my friends playing Gold and Silver during recess and on the bus in 5th Grade. :D

I forgot you could sequence break after the fourth gym. I have to go back and beat gyms 5 and 6, but I have already beaten gym 7.

I started playing last night. It's very easy to get into. I like how there are random battles, but only in the high grass.

Okay, I am in love with this game. Gold and Silver are easily my favourites, but lack the modern functions that I have grown to love. This combination of the two is excellent. Not too much has changed on the surface, but with the wifi and such it is the G/S of my dreams!

Hours: 17

Badges: 3 (taking my time)

Party:

Heracross lv20
Flaffy lv21
Dratini lv19
Skiploom lv22
Pidgeotto lv20
Poliwag lv20

I keep leveling up random pokemon that I do not plan to use just for the joy of pokemon training. I plan to spend way too much time in bug catching contests..
