SOLVED: Modding a 64 Pin Saturn

Post by christoph »

I have a japanese Saturn with round buttons. Here is a picture.

Do I follow the guide for the - Model 2 (32-pin) here on Racketboy? It looks like this picture but there is a couple minor differences.. I didn't know if it was different guides for Japanese Saturn or how exact they had to look..

Just wanted to make sure I follow the right guide before I started soldering.. :) thanks

It's a model 2, but I've heard that there are some hardware variations.

I don't know exactly, because the model 2 I had that was modded was done by someone else. :|

I believe its a model 2 64 pin Saturn. I have only modded a 32pin model 2, but I believe that yours is modable.

Hmm

So I am assuming I can't follow the Model 2 32pin guide here on Racketboy then, right?

you can try, but the success rate on 64pin ic boards isn't the best

also, this is your friend;

Dont forget that, with a Japanese Saturn you have to wire the Signal wire from point A on the chip to the 8th pin of the 64IC on the cd-drive board!

I dont know why this has to be done with a Japanese saturn, but its a good thing to do it either way. The A+B solder bridge is not a 100% thing.

And dont be discouraged from the fact you have a 64pin chip. My Pal system runs just fine with the chip! :) (Well, it was once a pal, Its basically fully ntsc/j now)

Here is my old thread if you are interested.

But the picture is a little outdated, I ended up getting my 5v power from the CD-Drive connector. A guide of how to do this you can find Here

Good luck, Im sure it'll work out. If you do have issues its easy to troubleshoot. I feel like people missinterpretate the success rate.

Its more about how good the saturn is able to pick up the chip. I discovered that, when I put a original japanese disc in my saturn and start the system up with the lid closed, it would then go to the menu and pick up original or backup games at any time.

If I start the system with the lid open, It would behave very odd and read originals but no backups. So yea that being said, If it dosnt work after your first try, keep troubleshooting it!

Try the "normal" way of doing it before you try the A+B method. About 99% of the time I read a "Help, my Saturn mod chip doesn't work" thread the person was trying the A+B method.

i tried every which way with several 64 pin IC's, be it the A+B method, or soldering to the IC. I could never get it to work. I found a 32 pin board, and it was done and working in 10 minutes. Still, it's worth the shot by all means.
