Full colour RGB output from a PS2 - Is it possible?

Post by Niode »

I was just wondering if this is possible at all on a PAL PS2? I want to be able to play Fire Pro Wrestling Returns in some form, and since the PAL version is ridiculously rare and the PS3 is completely incapable of playing imports without serious modification (it's possible but you have to solder a switch to the damn thing and have the case off to be able to do a swap trick - ugh) it looks like I'm going to have to play it on my PS2.

Why Sony why? Why did you make RGB output green over Scart? You fucking morons. The best display quality that Europe has access to (and one of the best things about living in Europe, almost makes the delays and constant shaft from games companies worth it) and you have to go and take it away from us. Even component is barely supported here. I swear only 2 of my 130+ PS2 library outputs over component (the rest roll on the screen or display all in purple, or only show 80% of the screen, or have weird colour issues) those being Soul Calibur 2 and Gran Turismo 4.

So yeah, enough of the rant. Is there any kind of modification I can perform so that the PS2 doesn't give me the green screen of death - so to speak?

I always get hideous pinnk or purple spot on my tv screen. It rarely happens on PS3, but on nintendo wii I see it often. Usually I would have to change channel and back to take out that color spot. Another problem with rgb cables is that it look great on tv, but I think its Sony fault that I can barely see the text on screen. Its so tiny to see by naked eye.

Is it a green tint when you output via a SCART cable? If it is, all you have to do is boot up your PS2 and go into options and change the video output from YPbPr to RGB. I bet that will fix your problem.

Let us know if this works for you.

LOL I am such a dumbass. I completely forgot about that. I will have had it on YPbPr when I was trying my component cable out and simply forgot to switch it back to RGB for my SCART cable.

Case closed.

That seems to me like what's called a "purity" issue with your TV. Do you have any speakers or magnetic objects that aren't shielded near your TV?

The only thing that is metal are the window bars. I don't have speakers setup. It a 30 inch Philips tv. Nothing really magnetic nearby. its alright it only happens sometimes. just leave this as case closed. I wish hd tv were dirt cheap.

Does the pink spot stay still and appear to be above the graphics of the screen? Because my old trinitron before it died started getting a purple spot in a certain part of the screen every now and then. I put it down to the tube dying.

If the purple spot moves rapidly or appears in the render of the graphics then it's likely that the consoles are over-heating and it's an artefact from the graphics card.

It a appears top left side, In order to fix that I just change channel and it fixes its self. Its just annoying sometimes. If I see it again, I'll just show you guys a picture what it looks like someday. This only occurs while playing wii games... so it never happens while watching tv. Now if my tv were to stop someday then i would get a flat screen tv. :) My tv is about 4 to 6 yrs old now.

Hmm very strange. It could be that the Wii is overheating and it some sort of artefact from the GPU? I'm not really sure what it is until I see it.
