What's a Good Atari Clone?

Post by shwisha »

The only one I can really find at this point is the Atari Flashback 2 which sound decent.

I searched racketboy and couldn't find many topics on Atari clones. Was wondering if anyone here had some good suggestions. I'd rather have something that comes with built in games or can play backup ROMs.

Thanks!

The atari flashback doesn't have a cartridge slot.

The Atari Flashback 2 can be modified with a cartridge slot. I think a few people over at AtariAge have even put a Harmony cart inside, so they have an Atari that accepts SD cards. It's really an Atari inside there.

I think that's about it really, unless you want to get into the old Atari clones like the Coleco Gemini. But if you're just playing the games, 2600s are cheap enough as it is.

So... for that price why wouldn't you just buy a 2600?

Slick!

Reminds me of the C64 30 in 1. Inside are solder pads for a PC keyboard and 1541 floppy drive.

Not a clone, but the Atari 7800 works with 2600 games. there is also an Atari 2600 adaptor that fits in the Atari 5200 cart slot.

Yeah, if you're really interested in Atari just buy a good lot on ebay or craigslist. I believe the Flashbacks only have joystick controls and that rules out some of the best games (Kaboom!, Indy 500).

If you just want to try out some of the basic games you can emulate with Stella, but to really have fun, the original console is the only way to fly.

For anyone who wants the ultimate Atari experience I recommend a 7800. Of course, it's backwards-compatible with the 2600 games. And while most of the 7800 games suck, there are definitive 2-player versions of Asteroids and Centipede that should not be missed!

The main reason I can think of is modern a/v inputs. You'd have to mod an original 2600 to accept anything other than RF out, where as the flashback 2 is upgraded to RCA.

The Flashback 2 actually uses standard Atari controllers, so you can use any accessory that was used on a 2600.
