True, but as is the case with Super C, that Flaming C sure lets you know what you are getting into.

I'm trying to think of other sequels that didn't include the previous title's name.

No, 1943 doesn't count.

Don't think ICO and Shadow of the Colossus works either.

Centipede and Millipede is too close to call.

Metal Combat was a sequel to Battle Clash (snes).

River City Ransom, if I'm correct, is a sequel to Vigilante.

Plus franchises were not established back then and besides it's more semantics again.
The whole point is releasing a Mario game without Mario in the title these days wouldn't be good for Marketing because the name is well established.

It's the same as not naming a Metal Gear game without Metal Gear in the title.
 we get your point just fine, we're just messing with you.

However I want to say that I consider Donkey Kong to be very much a part of the Mario franchise moreso than part of the later 'Donkey Kong' series, as does everyone else I know.
Well what happened was you was messing and I fell for it

Is Vigilante an alternate title for Renegade?

See, I knew I may have been mistaken.

Yeah, I meant Renegade. I just took a glimpse at my SMS collection, and confused the two games. Although both Renegade and Vigilante have some pretty hilarious fighting moves.

Also don't forget in the UK and possibly Japan Contra was called Probotector and Super C here was called Probotector 2.

Ikaruga was Project RS2, or Radiant Silvergun 2.

Silpheed was made by the same people, and contains many of the same enemies as Thexder. Dunno if that counts.

I'm sure there's a lot more.

Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers and The Peace Keepers all part of the Rushing Beat Trilogy

Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia

Target Earth and Cybenator both had Assault Suits in the japanese title though

Frequency and Amplitude

Berzerk and Frenzy

Goemon's Great Adventure and the Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon ties them to togther in the middle though with one word in one of the titles each.

Princess Crown and Odin Sphere

Street Combat and Ranma 1/2 : Hard Battle

A lot of titles being different has to do with Japanese confusion. Trying to sell to an Amercian audience then changing it back later.

That was because of the Iran Contra scandal. Same reason we got Super C when it had been Super Contra in the arcade.

Stargate, the sequel to Defender

At least on the NES, Lode Runner is kind of a sequel to Bomberman, but I don't think that counts.
