Mario is in a bunch of great games that doesn't have the name Mario in the title.

Those are cameo appearances if it's a Mario game these days you would have Mario in the title at the very least for Marketing purposes.

This wasn't a cameo appearance.

It's also stood the test of time, without the name Mario in it.

I don't think people consider Donkey Kong part of the Mario franchise because Donkey Kong is a franchise in it's own right

Plus franchises were not established back then and besides it's more semantics again.
The whole point is releasing a Mario game without Mario in the title these days wouldn't be good for Marketing because the name is well established.

It's the same as not naming a Metal Gear game without Metal Gear in the title.

From a marketing perspective, having a Metal Gear game without the words Metal Gear in the title would definitely stir up some publicity. Positive or not, you know what they say about publicity.

And, that's already happened:

Lol I'd love to see that happen Metal Gear Solid without Metal Gear in it.
Now its called Just Solid

Anyways on a serious note I think that people that don't keep up with the media would lose out. Some people don't bother with Magazines and Media such as just go to the store and browse for games sometimes.
I remember once I went to a shop and didn't really know anything about there being a new Castlevania out this particular one was preowned and the case was kinda tatty but I bought it because it was Castlevania.
Turned out Castlevania Symphony of the Night was one of the best purchases I ever made and I only bought it because I had played other games in the series.

EDIT : Snakes Revenge isn't considered the true Metal Gear 2

 we get your point just fine, we're just messing with you.

However I want to say that I consider Donkey Kong to be very much a part of the Mario franchise moreso than part of the later 'Donkey Kong' series, as does everyone else I know.

Very true.

But, you can't really argue that Donkey Kong isn't a main part of Mario's franchise.

I wouldn't consider Snake's Revenge to be a big part of the Metal Gear timeline, but I had to throw it out there after what you posted. Just some good nature ribbing.

it was weird when Operation C was released and it didn't say Contra anywhere on the box.
