Spending too much time at YouArcade

Post by AznKhmerBoi »

for some odd reason everytime i go back and play shenmue to revisit it, i tend to spend the bulk of my time going to YouArcade. Its not that i dont try to progress in the game but but for some odd reason i ten to end up at YouArcade. Whats type of things do you enjoy to do in shenmue besides the main Quest?

Pity no current emulators support the games in Shenmue! Speaking of arcade games I went to this one in a mall and they had a bunch of Sega's latest games (Sega Race TV, Rambo, Let's Go Jungle and two more biking and drifting games whose names I forgot).. Haven't had this much fun in ages. Even contemplated getting a Wii after the experience

As for Shenmue after playing Yakuza 1+2 there doesn't seem much to do in it (especially since having played it already on real hardware). I'm yet to play the sequel so hopefully things will improve.

^Shenmue II has mostly the same arcade games, but OutRun and AfterBurner II are in there as well, although you can't get them all conveniently in the same place in-game (although you can pop in the fourth disk and play them at your leisure, but that's not really the same). All the darts, slots, and QTE games and what have you have been ported over, but outside of that, all that's been added are alot gambling simulators, which are good fun, granted, but I doubt that you'll feel it's a massive step up from the first Shenmue in that regard. Still, play the damn thing if you had even a passing interest in the first installment.

As for me, things I'm doing as I currently play through Shenmue II mostly consist of playing thousands of rounds of OutRun and Space Harrier (I'm shocked at how good Shenmue has gotten me at those games) and just looking at things in great detail. I'm fascinated by artists creating worlds, noting the most minute details and saying "Who THINKS of these things?" - so yeah, when I walk through a bustling business sector I take the time to walk into shops and view the wares, watch workers stack boxes (which gets me every time), or go down to the pier and marvel at the incredibly simple, but wholly satisfying bird AI. To be blunt, I'm fascinated by just how far AM2 was able to go just by stamping textures onto simple polygons -- I mean, if you look at most things closely, the graphics of current generations kinda break the illusion of hyper-realism, but still, seeing all of these individually-simple (by today's standards) objects so meticulously interspersed amongst one another to create a believable world of such incredible scope fascinates me for hours on end. When I played the first Shenmue back in 2000, I did alot of the same, although my suspension of disbelief was held alot easier, but I felt more compelled to speak to people and get to know the people of the world better -- I felt less compelled to do this in Shenmue II because most of the more interesting characters are relegated mostly to cut-scene interaction, but still there are characters like Izumi who are interesting to interact with, if only to put into perspective just how fucking insane Ryo Hazuki has become (I need to write up my opinions on that sometime - there's an obvious Hamlet theme going on in Shenmue). But yeah, the arcades are always my favorite cut-and-dry diversion in Shenmue. I love the toy capsules as well, but they cost so much damn money, and I'm a frugal person by nature, so even in fantasy form I have a hard time justifying their purchase.

I actually don't like Shenmue, which makes that comic strip that much funnier for me. Really made me laugh, but hey I'll let you Shenmue fans get back to your conversation. Ignore the troll.

I wasted so much time in Shenmue 1 & 2 for all the same reasons that you stated. So much detail in that game, it's amazing. Also, according to the latest issue of Retrogamer, there are rumours that Sega will be willing to make the third Shenmue game if one of the console manufacturer's pays for exclusivity. I think the quote came from somebody from Sega. I don't have the magazine to hand, but I can scan the article if anybody is interested?
