brendanraymond wrote:ya, RGB = Component. that is a standard output on the saturn right? or do I have to program the saturn to use that output?
RGB and Component are two completely different video signals, it is not the same.
brendanraymond wrote:Composite video is also a standard output on the saturn... so why would a need a box to convert component to composite? (http://www.jrok.com/hardware/RGB.html)
I think you misunderstand. The JROK Transcoder takes an RGB signal and transcode or convert the video signal to Component. It also has Composite out.
brendanraymond wrote:And isn't that otherone for computer outputs to go into a TV monitor back in the day when graphic cards didnt support that??

(http://www.ramelectronics.net/audio-vid ... 11200.html)
Yes, allows VGA signal, example Dreamcast VGA to Component. The purpose is to convert Console signal of 640x480 to 480p mode for TVs that do not have a VGA input.
brendanraymond wrote:sooo how do i change the display res again to 31 kHz: 640×480, non-interlaced (progressive scan) and Hi-Vision: 704×480, non-interlaced (progressive scan) ? I am presuming its just through the component outputs?
Through the above mentioned Transcoder.
brendanraymond wrote:It seems possible as its just RGB comonents :S however I am sure there is more to it than that :S is it a case of I have to experement... id rather not waste my time if someone has already tried and failed >_<
I already tried the direct cable, doesn't work unless you like an off center purple display. Either transcoder, a Scart RGB European TV or go with S-Video.
brendanraymond wrote:It seems my firmware is version: PAL-C-V1.01a. I can't see any video options... is there some sort of advanced config boot mode or something or is there a way to update the firmware?

how do you change output format PAL, NTSC, NTSC-J PAL-60 etc etc
Unsure on the Saturn how to switch Video format signals. A lot of other consoles have a region jumper pad that can be modified.

Ah ok... well that changes all my thinking >_< embarrassing.

I dont think I will bother with changing the signal from RGB to comonent. I will just get a tv/tv tuner card with RGB inputs. That is the best for quality isnt it?

Also, When you said you tried the RGB to VGA... did you use the SYNC? That would probably explain the purple of centre screen. Was it on a monitor that could accept 15kHz?

Regarding the Jumpers, it does change the firmware... but it doesnt change anything to do with the Graphic outputs.

I tested and got these results for these jumper settings.

PAL-C-V1.01a Australian PAL
PAL-4-V1.01a American NTSC
PAL-1-V1.01a Japan NTSC-J
PAL-2-V1.01a Asia NTSC

As you can see it is still in PAL

That direct VGA to component non-working cable I tried was going from VGA Dreamcast to Component into a HD 120hz Sony CRT. Because of no transcoder to convert the signal the purple off center screen resulted. I may eventually try that JROK transcoder. As of now justification of cost and the fact that not all Dreamcast games support VGA anyways has held me off.

Looks to be your best bet is to get that PAL TV or TV tuner card with the RGB Scart input.

ok, gotcha.

on a seperate issue... I looked at my Saturn box and was looking at the specs, and it said this:

Other Features

Photo CD compatible (requires optional "Photo CD Operating System")

MPEG Video CD compatible (requires optional video CD card)

Audio CDs

Graphics & Extended graphics CDs (Please read the manual)

But actualy I dont have the manual... do you know where I can find more information on the extended graphics? if someone could upload it would be great ^^

A dead format. Certain music CDs had still picture graphics that would display on TV while the music plays with a compatible player.

CD+G

The most unique were the Laser Discs CD-Video. Combined video and music on a special gold disc.

Heres my rant on the Laser Disc.

ok... so after researching almost everything to do with av... I have now learned the difference between RGBS and DVI... My PC monitor miiight support low clock speeds but I guess I have to try. I also need a new TV tuner card as it doesnt support RGBS >_<

I also researched all those special add on features for the saturn... and I learned that the extended graphics bla bla wasnt what I thought it was... damn kareoke crap >_<

So I have learned that RGBS is the way to go... however I am still unsure how to change the saturns output settings. Wiki said it supported VGA, but there is no V and H Sync, just composit sync... and I have no idea what resolution, frame rate, if its interlaced or not or the output signal frequency weather its <15kHz or if it can be adjusted to 30kHz to make use of the "apparently supported" VGA mode.

so this all leads me to the final piece of the puzzle (I hope)... How does one change the graphics output on the damn console >_<_>_<_>_<_<_>_< gyyaaa

on a side note... anyone know a good place where I can get a good collection of isos? I got a torrent file for 19gigs of games but ofcourse no seeders.

cheers

Saturn RGBS output into what?

Post by brendanraymond »

Probably in the wrong sections...but anyway

Put simply... what is the best unit to take this signal, plus a whole heap more of other formats and convert it into HDMI format so I can send it to my PC via a HD capture card or send it to my HDTV. I looked at a few units only to be overwhelmed with 10x10^9999 products that can be bought.

I wouldnt want to spend anymore than $500 AUD

what would u guys recomend

Cheers

:D

The Saturn hardware does technically support VGA, but not a single piece of Saturn software in existence actually takes advantage of it. So basically it's just a technical footnote to make you go "huh, how about that". Even if you could get a VGA signal out of the Saturn, there'd be no point to it.

Is it an underground-gamer torrent? If it is, you can't download the files unless you have an account at underground-gamer, otherwise it'll appear that no one is seeding it.

I know that a guy over at Sega-16 got a SCART to HDMI converter to hook up his Genesis to an HDTV, so you may want to check that out here.

From what I've seen, there aren't a whole lot of testimonials out there from people who've used such a device for the same thing you want it for. Hopefully you luck out, though.
