If I remember right, some cheat programs such as Game Genie offered not just a random code entry, but a search codes routine during game play. It had a window running with scrolling Hex/Decimal numerals while the game screen was running in the background. I might be thinking back to the C64 days Snapshot carts? Bit of hacking guesstimation involved, but thrilling when you crack it.

Aren't these codes simply offset/value pairs? What you need to do first is to figure out where the value for level is stored. One way is to compare multiple save files. Let's say that you are on level 2, with a score of 5000. Save the same just before you hit level 3. Then save it again just after you hit level 3. Compare the two saves to see what's different using some sort of binary editor. You may have to repeat the process multiple times for the same levels (2 & 3) or perhaps other levels to figure which offset holds the level.
Same process but different method.
