If you want to play games off the hard drive you dont need to burn the game at all.

There are quite a few xbox ripping tools out there (dont know any of there names sorry).

Sorry, I misread what you wrote, 100% my bad.

If memory serves me correct you need to ftp up your xbox to your computer to rip and burn games.
If downloaded you just need to use imgburn, as burn as per normal.

Why would you want to do that? That's one of the best things about the xbox...the ability to play games off the hard drive.

Find a large cheap IDE drive (I've found 250GB, 320GB, 500GB) for around $30-40. Then rip your games to the hard drive. No more fussing with burned media.

Im assuming your talking about downloading the games off the net and burning them to a dvd-r? Its rather basic. Just google to find a site to download the games, make sure they are iso format. Use Imgburn to burn them. I only use sony dvd-r.

Of original xbox games? Short answer, No. Long answer, yes but it requires a certain firmware version and certain drives, plus certain games just simply don't work. It would be quicker/easier to just softmod an original xbox and play xbox games on that instead.

While we're on the topic, do all DVD based system (XBOX, PS2, etc.) need DVD-R or DVD+R or will either work? I'm still kinda fuzzy on what exactly the difference is.

It varies from system to system and media to media. That is why there isn't a definitive answer.
