Re: Where'd all the NES systems go?
last week i was at my local retro store a teen purchased an nes with 1 controller, hook ups, and 2 or 3 games for $100 dollars!! and the games weren't even that good either. in fact, i think all games he wanted were games that AVGN reviewed. would any of you buy a loose nes with 3 shit games for $100 dollars? and the kid was loving every second of it. not to mention the kid was probably born in the 90s and never even saw an NES growning up. so this purchase definitely wasn't based off nostalgia.
the reason you can't find any: retro gaming is just blowing up. simple as that.

if you took a shit, please put it back
Re: Where'd all the NES systems go?
Well... Good for us I guess! I will always be holding on to my NES but it's good to know theres some lovin goin on for ol' grey toaster nowadays. As far as investments go, $100 isn't that bad if people are willing to pay. I personally wouldn't touch anything over $50 in the current market.
Also, I have a love/hate relationship with retro stores- they are always over inflating their prices- sometimes in upwards of like 150%!! If you aren't going to follow the trends in retro gaming then you shouldn't own a store. When was the last time Super Mario World cost $35?! Some retro stores need to stop living in the past. Seriously.

The upside of that trend is it allows the real nerds to get new shirts.AppleQueso wrote:oh great, I bet it's all there with the whole "BEING A NERD IS COOL LOOK AT MY NINJA TURTLES SHIRT I GOT AT HOT TOPIC" fad that's been going on the past few years.fastbilly1 wrote:It became popular to have an NES again. It's just become more popular over the last 5-10 years. I think the Wii juggernaut and the Nintendo nostalgia that goes with it have pumped it up even more.

Re: Where'd all the NES systems go?
The main reason is the shitty pin connector and the general attitude of "it's broken, throw it out" with all things electronic. I would imagine more NES consoles have simply been thrown out compared to others. You would be surprised at how many people have no idea you can buy new connectors.
And I don't want to hear any shit about how the "new connectors don't work well," if it doesn't work well, you screwed up the installation. You probably didn't hook the tray under the motherboard properly as most people don't if they aren't reading a guide. I've replaced several NES 72 pins and they all work like a champ afterwards (and work in the "up" position like a normal pin connector instead of requiring clicking down, which requires a limp-wristed connection on the cartridge).
I think the AVGN has played a role in its popularity spike as well since until recently he was almost exclusively an NES ranter. I hate to admit it, but seeing the AVGN with all of his games inspired me to start collecting rather than just emulating. I mean, I collected before then, but nothing older than about PSX, my SNES and NES collections were stagnant since the mid-late 90's (mostly due to emulation).

Please don't call the Wii a "juggernaut," the Wii is the video game equivalent of "the most annoying sound in the world" from dumb and dumber. Every time I think about it I just hear "EEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH".RadarScope1 wrote:It's just become more popular over the last 5-10 years. Regardless, it's sold more units then the other guys, brought in large sections of previously untouched markets, and made Nintendo a household name again. Some of us may not care for it, but it's certainly sold like hotcakes.17DaysOlderThanNES wrote:Please don't call the Wii a "juggernaut," the Wii is the video game equivalent of "the most annoying sound in the world" from dumb and dumber. I think the NES is finally becoming the next 2600, as in the system that is really old, but still kinda cool
