This title should be rephrased as:

Which companies do you want to go bankrupt by ditching their flagship titles?

the only thing that needs to retire is this topic. no matter what we say or do Sonic, Mortal Kombat, Halo, Guitar Hero and especially Madden will never retire because they are franchise names. Their going to keep coming back because of the die hard series fans.

not to mention the fact that if you were to go to the publishers of Madden and say "hey, there's too many Madden games. Time to retire." they would pull out their most recent bank statement, point to the bottom line and laugh you out of their offices. As I said before, as long as a game company can make $ (ie: people are buying their product) they will continue to produce it. Economics, y'all.

Exactly.

Where would Sega be without Sonic?
Where would EA be without Madden?

Which sucks because I wouldn't mind seeing some of the capital going from flagship titles to more innovative and creative, albeit unknown, IP's. I love Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed, Skate, Dead Rising, Portal, Left For Dead, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Gears of War, etc. All of these were monster hits and tons of fun and none of them had big name mascots or was sequel #10 in a franchise.

I do enjoy Halo, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Call of Duty etc. But I wouldn't mind in the least if the developers/publishers gave them a break and put them on the shelf for a few years at at time and took some chances on some fresh ideas. See what sticks.

You know, around 10 years ago, Square used to put out games that didn't have "Final Fantasy" in the title, and plenty of them too. I miss those days.

I wonder if it would ever make sense to have virtual actors-- like the same recognizable character model, but they played different roles. Like, Solid Snake's character model playing the role of a skater in the latest Tony Hawk release. Maybe you could help market a new franchise by including cameos and stuff like that.

After putting out Spider-Man, activision included his character in THPS 2.

But I'm sure we all ready knew that.
