So how much would you spend on an old game?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

A lot of your board game examples and other types of gaming (outside of videogames) really interests me. What kind of non-videogame goes for that kind of price range?

Anything that you can accrue extensively over time can eventually get there. Thing is a single of those kind of games are perhaps better compared to a collection of other games.
You could for example compare a Magic: the Gathering collection of cards versus a collection of SNES games, or something like that. Sure, MtG is 1 game, but with all the expansions and so on I feel in many cases it is fair to compare that to (say) a collection of games for a single console.

So basically any kind of miniature gaming, comic books, card games with that kind of "collecting" designed into it.

Conversely, something like WoW where you pay a monthly fee is once again going to stack up month after month.

Ah I over looked something like Magic the Gathering. I actually used to play it myself and wouldn't mind getting back into it. My friends started doing something where each of them would buy 4 boosters. Then trade among them (with only those 4 boosters) and each make a deck (he had plenty of mana/lands available). So instead of seeing who could buy the best deck it was who could put one together like that. They'd also buy a starter deck and then maybe 2 boosters and trade among them and play with just those cards. Always a new spin.

And yeah I guess I didn't quite pick up on what he meant by installments.

Typically things that go for that much in one blow are sealed copies of long out of print games. For example two years ago a new copy of Titan (and 1970s game) was $700 (900 with the expansion boards). Used copies were in the $200-300 range.

Titan is alot like if Tactics Ogre/Final Fantasy Tactics was a board game. You move a big stack of counters around a board getting new counters as you go (all fantasy creatures) and when to stacks meet they go off to a side board, reveal what is in the stack, and play it out like a battle in TO/FFT. Luckily they finally reprinted the game in 08 and you can get it in its 7ish pounds of cardboard glory for $50ish. Now you just have the problem of finding people to play with.

Their are many special editions of games that go for $300 or more (Settlers of Catan 3d [chest version] is the first to come to mind), and several games that will never be reprinted due to licensing issues that fetch that high (Avalon Hill's Dune - which is worth the $100+ entry fee many times over [best boardgame of all time]). Not to mention you can add custom pieces to almost any game.

Other titles that would cost that much overtime would be those that you can expand. Games like those made by Games Workshop or MultiMan Press. Warhammer is the obvious example of a game you can drop alot of money on in a short amount of time. Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) is another.

I cannot think of any RPG worth that much. I bought a copy of D&D first edition that I was going to have Gygax sign (I was driving up to his convention but he passed away weeks before it), but those only go for $700ish. Typically I just play whatever RPG a friend is willing to run. But I am rewritting Car Wars for a more con friendly experience and I use to run a mean game of Car Wars.

Magic and Warhammer are the posterboys for installments. But there are full fledge boardgames that can be just as bad. Descent, Formula De/Formula D, hell even Carcassone has about a dozen expansions.

I would never blow that kinda money. So many games of different varieties at a good price to pick from. Sure, I'm happy when I have discovered a rare gaming item, but only if I bought it at a good price. I never buy for investing. The costliest piece of accessory I bought was the Blaze Dual Shock for a 100 but that is because I wanted one to use, not just to collect.

It depends on the game itself. While I am usually not willing to pay more than about 10 € for game, there are some games I want to buy for a lot more money, because I am sure that it will be well worth the price. It's mostly games in series that I love, like Castlevania:Rondo of Blood for the Turbografx-16 for about 100 USD...wich I am going to buy in the future :)

But I would not buy a game like Earthbound, because I am not sure, that I would enjoy it.

The most I've ever spent buying an old game is about $60. The most I've spent buying a new game was $80.

Game controllers on the other hand, I've spent a lot more. $150 for Samba maracas, $300 DDR pad, $300 Guitar Freaks controller, and $1000 for a full on "normal" drum set to use with Drum Mania. Sadly, I had to sell the drum set later because I injured my wrist playing tennis and wasn't able to drum anymore >_>

I've also spent hundreds on MMO's, either from monthly fees or cash shop items.

Anyway, I'd like to say that I wouldn't spend more than a few hundred on an old game but it all depends.

There's only two games I'd drop more than $50 for. Shantae for the GBC, and Earthbound for the SNES (once I actually get a SNES lol). I've beaten Eartbound on emulator enough times to make me want to physically own it, and Shantae just looks like a cool game. Other than that I try not spending a lot on a single game.

Sourcebooks and stuff for tabletop games are another story. The core book for Dark Heresy for example runs $60. But that's one book for four to five people, and you're getting several sessions use out of it hopefully.
