With all the big sales on eBay lately, it got me thinking about what kind of person would part with $20k to own a NES game and would I if I had the cash?
I dont think that I would, it would just seem like a waste. The most I've ever spent on a single game that wasnt current gen is no more than £20. If I ever win the lottery (I'd have to start playing first though) I might be convinced spend a couple of hundred to own the right game, but I'd never be able to justify buying a Nintendo Championship cart since gaming wise it wouldnt offer anything I couldnt get somewhere else - it would only be for the pride of having such an article on my shelf.
So how about you, would you blow enough money to buy a nice car on a super rare cart?
So how much would you spend on an old game?

Nice car? Not much. Rarely is a car an investment, it's just a use of funds. That said, I'd love a 1932 Ford Roadster. It wouldn't bother me to restore one or to even have a kit car.Curlypaul wrote: So how about you, would you blow enough money to buy a nice car on a super rare cart?
On a game? Well, that all depends. If ti actually is an investment, sure, I'd drop some serious cash on it. But, we're talking about museum pieces, and not just a black label FF7 CIB with a spelling misprint (I heard Jcree almost bought one at a yard sale for a nickel but he thought it looked like a crappy game).
And it's all relative to how much money you have. I've seen people on "Cribs" who own some unbelievably rare comics, and they have no interest in comics. They just own it to own it.
Of course, I'm still buying games, but I'm trying to be more frugal with my money. I'm hoping to have kids sometime on the next three years, and Lord knows, they are expensive. Especially if they're going to be like me and "test the durability" of every product (aka, I break a lot of stuff on accident).

I'm not so sure I could see myself ever spending more than $50 on a game to be honest.
Re: So how much would you spend on an old game?
Well.... no more than 100 usd.
Re: So how much would you spend on an old game?
Beyond the 100 USD mark I'd be better off buying a modchipped system and just pirating it.

The most i HAVE spent was $130 or $150 i dont really remember (radiant silvergun), that is when i didn't quite have the responsibilites i have today. Today $50 - 60 is the absolute most i would spend.
Re: So how much would you spend on an old game?
A little over a 100 is the most I have ever paid for a single game. That was a harsh lesson, let me tell ya. And I will never do that again. Games are only worth what you are willing to pay for them.
If you don't have any soundtracks on vinyl you are doing yourself a disservice

It really just depends on what it is:
A cartridge or CD, only rare cases will I drop more than $50.
Arcade games I wont go over $300, unless it is a no brainer (I dont buy pinball machines).
Boardgames I wont go over $100 in increments. I may drop a grand on a game, but itll be over the course of many years.

Re: So how much would you spend on an old game?
I just could not part with an exorbitant amount of money on a game and feel like it was the right thing to do. My gaming budget is approx. $100 a month, and I would rather own alot of smaller, less expensive titles than one big one.
That said though, I have been keeping my eye on M.U.S.H.A for some time now, and would be willing to pay about $80 for it CIB. Same goes for the NTSC-J Magical Chase, but it's hard to find that one for less than $150.
It really depends on how much I enjoy the game/how much I think the game is worth. Doom 64 for $5? Hell yeah. Earthbound for $100? Forget it.
I think money spent vs. time spent playing is what really separates 'gamers' from 'collectors'. I know some serious collectors that just want to display their items like they are artifacts of a forgotten age. I on the other hand want to play the shit out of some Earthworm Jim, ya dig?
