I'm sure there may have been other times as well, say, during the atari/colecovision/intellivision wars.
I'm sure you can find the sales/volume numbers somewhere, perhaps in an annual report.

Microsoft isn't coming out with a next gen console, they're just making a new version of the 360 with built in Project Natal and other hardware updates. Nintendo is going to come out with the next new console, supposedly out by Holiday 2010 or 2011.yomomma1 wrote:Now The ps3 might outsell the 360, but probably by that time a new microsoft console would be coming out.

Everyone expected the PSP to kill the DS, but we all know how that worked out. Also, the Genesis was doing better than the SNES at first, but by 1994 it had reversed.

The most powerful console never "Wins" Infact, in the past I don't think ANY of the most powerful consoles have "won" the console wars. There was a website a little while ago that was running down the console wars from the 2600 onward, the most powerful console placed around third.
That said, there is no such thing as a console war, It is just a load of shit. The wii is going to sell the most, it already has, you want to know why? It tapped a previously Untapped market. Nintendo got their fill this generation, Sony got theirs the last two.
Rundown of the previous generations:
Sixth
Most powerful: Xbox
Least powerful: Playstion 2
Most units sold: Playstation 2
Fifth
Most powerful: N64
Least powerful: Playstation
Most units: Playstation
Fourth
most powerful: Neo Geo
Least powerful: TG-16
Most sold: SNES
I am not Positive about the fourth, but I am sure that is what it was. Anyway, my point is, the most powerful system is NEVER the best selling. That said, companies still support their system as long as possible, the upcoming Add-ons won't end well, the Genesis proved that add-ons do NOT work well to extend sales.

As far as raw horsepower, the Playstation wasn't more powerful than the N64, but it did have some major advantages that could make it seem more powerful. Cds for one. Not only were CDs shinier and more futuristic than carts, they could hold pretty prerendered CGI on them. You also got better audio out of the psx (or more audio anyway).DNT 2.5 wrote:The most powerful console never "Wins" Infact, in the past I don't think ANY of the most powerful consoles have "won" the console wars. I would say the PS3 has a similar advantage this time around (blu-ray), PLUS it's the most powerful.
As for the fourth generation, it was a weird time for consoles. Technically I guess the Neo-Geo was the most powerful, but it was hardly a mainstream system. I'd say that generation came down to SNES Vs. Genesis, and I'm pretty sure the SNES was more powerful.
I think it usually comes down to one thing, Sony wins no matter how much they fuck up along the way. I do think they've done some serious damage to themselves this time around, but they'll still probably sell more than anyone in the long run. It won't be by as much this time though.

Re: Did it ever happen in console wars?
Well a good example that many people forget is the Genesis vs. the SNES. As far as I know, the Genesis was destroying the SNES for at least its first few years, and then basically got screwed by how the Sega CD was handled. I could be off about this though, I can't recall hard data on the subject, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
