So I broke down and got SF1 for the VC. I beat this game back in college, but I want to play again.
If I wait to promote I am assuming that I will get the same advantage that I did in SF2... am I right?
Right now all of my characters are promotable now at level 10-12, but I am planning on waiting until a minimum of level 20 to promote.

In SF1 unpromoted chars cap at 20, and you definately want to promote at 20, not 10. In SF2 it's not nearly as necessary to wait til 40, and in fact can do just fine promoting at 20. SF2 has the advantage of having repeatable battles without using Egress (not to mention the Fairy Forest) so you can pretty much just clean house.

Yes, it's tough to level up to 20 in SF1 but very important. SF1 was the first RPG I got way into. I had to get SF2 that Christmas after renting SF1 earlier in the year. The other RPG which I fell in love with around then was Phantasy Star IV. Very different but still awesome. Light Crusader and Landstalker came close after. But wow, Shining In The Darkness was a bitch to get through.
SF1 has some awesome characters to chose from - who are you using!?

The first time I beat this game (in the mid 90's) I think I promoted everyone at lv 10 and had no problem beating the game... but I also did nothing but play the game.thecommontask wrote:Yes, it's tough to level up to 20 in SF1 but very important. Right now everyone but my healers are >lv12 and I am at the Laser Eye battle. I am using the original party in the order I got them so far with Arthur being the weakest as of now. I avoid using the birdmen and Luke/Gort are my tanks while Max is an offensive powerhouse.

It's funny to here all the wait until level 20 or 40 talk. I used to always promote as soon as I could and beat each game countless times. Now I do wait until 20 & 40 but it's not necessary.

Well yeah you can still beat the game of course, but man it's so much more gratifying to beast on your enemies by waiting.synbiosfan wrote:It's funny to here all the wait until level 20 or 40 talk. I find the real challenge is trying to beat the game at the lowest level.
I do play the level up game too!
Depends on my mood.

I never knew that there was any benefit to when you promoted so I always did it as soon as I could. But then again, when I was playing SF2, I did not have the benefit of a manual, so I did not know what some items were for or that you could combine some items.

playing shining force one on xbox 360 sega classics whatever its called just got past the 1st chapter fighting undead in a church. stuck at the moment but my question is what does promoting do all my characters are level 9 ish apart from khris who is only about level 3
Re: Shining Force 2
Promotion does a few things. High level weapons require your character to be promoted. Certain spells require your character to be promoted. Additionally, there is a level cap, and promotion allows you to continue to gain levels. I also believe that promoted characters tend to have better level gains. Finally, the amount of experience you get increases after you promote initially, as the game calculates experience based on your level vs. the enemy level, but a level 1 unpromoted is equivalent to a level 1 promoted for the purposes of that calculation.artful dogger wrote:playing shining force one on xbox 360 sega classics whatever its called just got past the 1st chapter fighting undead in a church. stuck at the moment but my question is what does promoting do all my characters are level 9 ish apart from khris who is only about level 3
