Personal rant: Know-it-alls, their plunder of knowledge a lot of times goes on deaf ears because of the rude and superior ways they decide to give their knowledge. They can't be wrong only right, all who are opposed are misinformed.
It seems in any scene where there is a hardcore fan base, there will be the know-it-alls. They got their info from somewhere and weren't always informed, but you for being misinformed are an idiot. You should have already known the answer because they do.
The Retro gaming scene is large enough where more and more are being added everyday.
I thought it would be fun to add the types that abound in the retro gaming community. This is all in good humor.
The Employee
They worked at so-in-so and such-and-such so their first hand knowledge is better than yours. Where they worked did it one way, that has to be the only way or at least the best way. Normal people who wouldn't normally be like this become one just from working. They work around something to do with gaming, it becomes ingrained in their head that now they are in the know.
The Googler
They find questions then "google" it. Because some website said it, it has to be true. These are also the types that add to wikipedia pages. They will type responses often plagiarized, typing as though their own words. If you contradict them you better have a link or they won't believe you, even then they still might not because they didn't find it when googling.
The Original Gamer
These know-it-alls were there from the beginning. They had a NES in 1985 or any system when released, so there knowledge is the best because they were there first. All those who come after or just getting into retro, especially systems made before said persons were born, are posers in their eyes and have nothing to offer the retro community. A lot of times they come across as old men yelling at kids to get off the lawn.
The Youngling
These know-it-alls are the opposite of the Original Gamers. They are new to the scene. They purchased the newest systems and got exposed to retro gaming by downloadable content or found their parents or older sibilings video game systems. Youth blinds their eyes, so a lot of times they can't see when they are wrong. They are fresh and young, so they have to be right.
The Fanboy
Often times these are the most ill-informed know-it-alls. They hold allegiance to brands or genres or series and stand by them no matter what. The only knowledge they accept is ones that support their cause. They will site all the greatness of what they enjoy and dismiss the fallacies with excuses. They will be the first to call others fanboys, because who else would oppose them otherwise.
The Tech
These are the ones that are into the working knowledge of systems. They love moddifying systems. They feel their technical knowledge gives them the edge in knowing the most about gaming. Because of the inner workings of such-and-such system, the game is superior on this machine. Often times they will blind you with technical garbage to prove their points, while you are left too stunned to say anything other than what they said.
The Forum Junkie
These types of know-it-alls get off on joining many forums to build their knowledge then pummel their enemies. These types will always have links to other forums to back up what they say. Right when they join a new forum, they try to show the greatness for which they are. They often times don't read other's post because only they have the best answer.
The Collector
They own more games than they will ever play. Because of their large collection, they think that their knowledge holds more sway. They will often jump on those that burn games. To them, if you don't own a certain game, you know nothing. You have to own it to have knowledge on it.
Now there are many more types, but here are some I jokingly named. At times we can all sometimes fall in these groups (I think all of them for myself) but just try not to stay trapped. It's nice to have knowledge and share it, but we should also try to respect others and have a open mind.
Tell me what you think of know-it-alls. Have a type to add, feel free. Have you ever acted like one and what type were you? Got a rant on Know-it-alls, add it.

Re: Know-it-alls
I'm betting alot of people here would be "The Collector" I have some games I haven't ever played(Other than to test) because they are some stupid sports title.
Also people who burn games because they can't find the game don't deserve to play it.(Any game over 110 dollars is an expection, but I still hate you)

Re: Know-it-alls
I'm all of these, except the youngling and the fanboy. And I'm not really a tech, but I want to be. I'm jealous of the tech. A smart tech can crumble my entire empire of know-it-all-hood.

I am not a TechCollOG!
Well, I try not to be anyway.
Anyway, yeah, sharing knowledge is cool. If someone is wrong, it can be pointed out without insulting them. Being part of a community involves listening as well as sharing. 'Yelling over the top of others' to try and make your answer sound better than everyone else is rude. Post/forum membership count ≠ good contributing member.

Before you make a comment about the perceived faults of everyone else, perhaps you should run a spell-checker or use correct English. I mean, some of your points were spot-on but your delivery was flawed, therefore, I will ignore your post outright. Not only that I will ignore all your future posts and and post made by anyone who may remind me of your name. Take it all back and try again.

Re: Know-it-alls
I worked for Sega when the dreamcast came out, if you don't believe it you can google it, I'm sure there's some random web page with evidence of this! And since I worked for them I bought it on DAY ONE! And let me tell you, the sega dreamcast is the best system ever and nothing else can compare. If you can't see that YOU ARE WRONG. And if you even think the PS2 is technically superior then you have clearly never opened up your dreamcast to see how it works. I have, and let me tell you, the technology in there is amazing, maybe you just can't understand it? I can provide you with any number of links to dreamcast forums (I have 214 bookmarked!) where people can prove to you that the dreamcast is better. You'd be best off not even arguing with me though, how can someone who owns over 600 dreamcast games (And I've beaten at least 9-10 of them) be wrong?!

Re: Know-it-alls
Thanks, I need to add Grammar Police. I forgot about that one. But I would add the Grammer Police also might be the type that calls video game characters by their Japanese name or cal a Genesis a Mega Drive.Reccos wrote:Before you make a comment about the perceived faults of everyone else, perhaps you should run a spell-checker or use correct English. tl;dr
Seriously though, I don't see what's wrong with being a Tech. I spend most of my time in the Tech Help and Hacks & Mods section because I enjoy helping people, it's very rewarding knowing that something works because of your help. I don't even care that nobody ever has solutions to the problems that I post there. It doesn't matter to me, all that matters is that somebody goes away happy at the end of the day.
@ the mega drive thing. What the fuck is wrong with calling a Mega Drive a Mega Drive? That's what they are called... It's the yanks that had to be different, you're the only country that calls it a Genesis.
