Did it ever happen in console wars?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Did it ever happen in console wars?

Post by RCBH928 »

I was wondering did it ever happen in a console war , where one console looked like the winner of the generation but then lost?

I know it happened before where for example on the first month or 3 months for example Saturn would sell 1 million but psx sold only 0.5 million , but by the end of the year psx sold 10 million against 2 million for Saturn.

I also know that for example a console released earlier might have sold more but then lost once the new console came out , like Dreamcast and ps2.

But did it ever happen when one console was clearly selling more and was popular but then it lst hype, while the other gained momentum?

I am asking this because I am wondering if the ps3 will pass 360 or wii, I don't recall this ever happening. Consoles usually hold on to their places within the first year, if you were #1 in year 1 , you probably will always be #1.

I just think it would be unlikely for the ps3 to catch up to the wii, because the audience is different. Now The ps3 might outsell the 360, but probably by that time a new microsoft console would be coming out.

For quite some time, the Turbografx-16 was outselling the Sega Mega Drive.

I think we all know how that turned out.

I was thinking about this last night... the TG-16 graphics were really something when it first hit. I mean, until Genny hit the mark with Sonic so that people starting paying attention, how could Sega compete with the look of something like Bonk? That shiz was amazing. I had a TG-16 back then, and I really enjoyed it.

Err...The Turbografx-16 outsold MD and SNES combined?
I've got no signature.

If it weren't for my love of Altered Beast, I would have purchased a TG-16.

I agree. I picked up my Genesis in November 1989 and the Altered Beast pack-in was the deciding factor, as I wanted something that would play arcade quality games.

If we're talking North America, yeah, the TG-16 did have a lead on the Genesis in the early days (The PC-Engine, however, always beat the Mega Drive and, in Japan, was the primary threat to Nintendo and a main reason for development of the Super Famicom). As Golden Axe, Revenge of Shinobi and other quality titles started being released, the tide turned in Sega's favor. NEC really missed an opportunity by not releasing some of the better titles from the PC-Engine in the US (though, Nintendo's strangle-hold on third party developers complicated US releases for certain titles, to be fair).

Initially, I'm thinking the Genesis regularly outsold Super Nintendo as well. From what I remember, this tide started to turn when Street Fighter II debuted exclusively on the SNES. The Super Nintendo continued to pick up steam and by 1994 with the release of Donkey Kong Country, Nintendo surpassed Sega in sales.
YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS ARE DEAD. GAME OVER.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure the sales for the PC-Engine crushed the Mega Drive in Japan for much more time than in the States.

I bought the Genesis because it really felt like it brought the arcade home. But, this was during a time when arcades thrived.

my dad's house had a Genesis. My mom's house had a TG16. So I got to experience them both in their prime.

You were one lucky kid. It was unheard of back in the day for any of my friends and classmates to own two major consoles at once during there prime. One of my best friends growing up had a Playstation and N64 during that era. Everyone was jealous of him.
