Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

So I was looking at google groups...

Post by AppleQueso »

Inspired by the recent Usenet thread, I decided to do a search on Google Groups to find gaming related posts from the 90s. It's very interesting to read stuff people were discussing about older consoles from back when these were all cutting edge technology.

One thing just kept jumping out at me reading this stuff though, and that's how really, gaming discussion has not changed at ALL in the past 20 years. I mean seriously, look at some of these quotes, you could just change a few names around and you'd have your average modern-day gaming forum post right there (might not even need to do THAT in some cases).
about the SNES wrote: Isn't a shame that video machine companies can't do a better job of controlling
the quality of the games? I hate to say it, but Nintendo's Seal of Approval
is a joke (there are alot of great games, but also alot of crap).
discussing the dominance the Genesis seemed to be having over the SNES, and the possible downfall of Nintendo wrote:>Sounds like Nintendo might go down like Atari did unless Nintendo
> gets its butt moving.

Oh, with Nintendo's assets and cash reserves, I rather doubt they'll
vanish overnight. Still, they do seem to be finding out that they're not the
invincible juggernaut we may have thought they were, and that consumers won't
fall all over themselves to buy expensive electronics just because they have
"Nintendo" printed on the case...
(try replacing "Nintendo" with "Sony" in your mind in the one above)

Not to mention a few rather hilarious posts when looking at them with what we know today, like:
about the 32x wrote:if you already have a Genesis+CD the 32x is a cheap
way to keep current and will likely be supported for some time to come
I'd suggest definitely checking it out yourself, just use the advanced search in google groups, type a few generic keywords (such as "Sega", "Playstation", etc) and set the date range to whatever you're interested in. It's a pretty fun read, watch out for spam though.

It would be nice if Nintendo came out with a 32 bit add on for
the Super NES.

And the response was: That will be a waste of time, how long do you think the 32X of the Genesis
would last, I believe it'll be gone within a year.
I've got a better Idea. stop waiting for a 32 bit system and start
waiting for a 64 bit system. Nintndo's already announdced a the ultra 64
that will be 4 times as powerful as a super nes and twice as powerful a
sega's 32x. The ultra 64 won't be an sdd-on, but it will have games like
killer instinct, crusin' usa and DOOM. But if you really want a wimpy 32
bit system, the vr 32 (virtual reality ) will be comeing out in apriland
will be just as powerful as segas 32x but will be 3-d and in your face. I
guess it would be *nice* if nintendo came out with a 32 bit add-on, but
that would suck. Instead they're going all the way to 64 bit with none of
this add-on crap.

"It's going to be 3-d and in your face." And the games he mentioned weren't even really the good ones. Guess he was probably happy with Mario 64.
Fourty games planned to be out by March 95, 100+ titles planned out by the
end of 95, most major third party companies developing 32X games... What's
convinced you that it will be gone within a year? If you mean that you
have no interest in buying it personally, just say so. But I think that
companies like Acclaim and Shiny (among others) are bright enough not to
waste their time or money on a doomed system.

Uhhh, wasn't there only 34 games released total ;)
Do you think it's possible for them to release 100+ games by the end of 95!!!
I don't think they even released 100 games in 1994 and you mean they'll
release 100+ games by 95!!! NO WAY!!!

Psychic right here.
I agree the 32x is waste. It will be fogoten when the new systems are
released.

I'm going to stop before I just end up copying the whole topic...

Said I was going to stop but I just had to:
So you think that the 32x is a waste huh? I think you are just jealous
becuase SuperNES players have to admit that they are sick of waiting around for
the Ultra 64 while Sega players are already playing 32-bit CD-Rom games. The
32x is going places. Just wait until Mortal Kombat 2 comes out for it next
month. Then you will change your tune. With over 100 games in development and a
very possible upward compatibiltiy with the Saturn, the 32x is guaranteed a
long life. So all of you who slam the 32x can just bite me. If you have
anything to say do it here!!

Predator and DOOM are reason enough NOW to invest in 64-bit future power.
Tell your friends that more software is on the way. Guess I'm just one
happy camper... And the $149 CD-ROM player is coming soon.
The pretty amusing hype of the Jaguar of all things aside, I just find it so very hard to fathom the thought of DOOM being the Crysis of its day.

I'm going to have to look into this. But isn't google a relatively new company? I didn't think google groups were around in the mid 90s. . . or does it just pull posts from other places?

I wonder what this Bryan O' Neill fellow is up to these days. Wouldn't it be wild if he were on the Racketboy forums?

Bryan, if you're reading this, fess up.

I believe Google took over or bought out dejanews.com. In the 90s, dejanews.com was the usenet internet archive.

Like the OP, I totally enjoy reading legacy posts. It's fascinating to get a glimpse of what the feelings were for that era.

EDIT: I just confirmed that going to http://dejanews.com redirects to Google groups.

I think the best one I've read so far is the one from the release of the Super Famicom.

(Can somebody find the post discussing it here? - I can't find it...)
