Is it up to the publisher to decide if they want to use Steam Play, or is it up to Valve?
As a consumer, I would like Steam Play applied to all games that can be played on both Mac and PC, but I can see publishers wanting people to buy a copy for Mac and a copy for PC. They have to do the work for both, so they will want compensation.

And if the publisher is left to decide, do you guys have some data that would persuade publishers to use Steam Play? The demographic for Steam Play is really people that own both a Mac and PC. I would imagine that if you collected data on how many people in that demographic actually buy the same game on both platforms and compared it against the increased likelihood to purchase a game knowing that it could be played across both platforms, then the data would probably support Steam Play, but it's hard to know without looking at numbers.
I don't know much about the games side of valve, just comics and what they tell me about their plans. But i would assume based on the conversations i had with everyone there that it is going to be a publisher by publisher basis. I'm sure that valve is going to be collecting a ton of data about macs and steam play over the coming months. I don't think they are going to campaign for publishers to use it, but if publishers are curious the data will be there for them.

Ultimately, I know that valve doesn't want to dictate how anyone should build their game. They just provide options. What will convince publishers is if a ton of mac players jump in steam. If it is a bigger market than they assume it is, and a market willing to spend some cash.

Direct2Drive also does digital distribution for Mac. In fact, they have everything on their Mac channel on sale for up to 50% off until 3/11/2010.

Also, GamersGate has Mac games as well.

When I saw dragon age up on gamersgate, for a second i thought i was missing out on mac games.... and then i looked at all the other top sellers.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect them to dictate how a publisher builds their game, but I would expect Steam Play to be a feature they would want to promote, so I would think they would want to have that kind of info handy for would-be Mac+PC publishers. Steam Play is brilliant in theory, but it will only work in practice if they can sell the publishers on the idea.

I just worry that publishers will take a short-sighted viewpoint of this, whereby they either get paid once for their PC version and once for their Mac version, or they use Steam Play and get paid once for both their PC and Mac version. If they think like that, they won't use Steam Play. There has to be evidence that people don't buy the same game twice AND that they would be more likely to make a purchase on either PC or Mac if they knew they only had to pay one entry fee.

Within the group of people that own both PC and Mac you have 3 groups of people:

Group 1: will buy the same game for PC and Mac
Group 2: will buy the game on one platform, but don't care about having it on the other.
Group 3: wouldn't have bought the game if it wasn't on both platforms (or they would have waited until it was cheaper).

You need group 3 to be larger than group 1. Group 2 doesn't really factor into whether you would use Steam Play or not.

This is how companies should work. A great software platform, coming to a great hardware platform, with absolutely no drawbacks.
  • All my (valve) games will work on both platforms, even ones I already own.
  • I can play my games on my gaming rig at home, and then take them with me on my mac when I'm away from home.
  • I can play with mac and PC users with no restrictions.
Why can't all press releases be this good all the time?

After all, making gaming more mainstream on Apple's machine just strengthens the platform as a whole.

It's a parody of the original Apple ad isn't it?

So all Source based games will be available from the get go at least. Very cool to hear.
