New Ironman tourney July 10th

Post by DaGamingMonkey »

My friends loved the first one. We're planning on running it every 3 months.
Here are my fliers for "Level 2"

Hoping for a good turnout as always and it should run smoother since the first one showed me where the possible bugs occur.

This sounds like a great idea. I don't know all the systems you've got so I'll just throw some games out there.

Perfect Dark (N64)
Mario Tennis (N64)
Power Stone 2 (Dreamcast)
Mortal Kombat (any system)
F-Zero X (N64) (or GX on GC)
Tekken Tag Tournament (PS2)
Gauntlet (original, how long can you last)
Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament (Dreamcast)

As for scoring, this is what I'd do. Find a way to "rank" each game. So let's say you play Goldeneye, have everyone play X amount of games, and then rank people based on their total, final score. So someone comes in 1st overall because they had +58, someone comes in 2nd with their +53, etc. Then you give a point value to the place. 1st rank 10 points, 2nd 6 points, 3rd 3, 4th 2, 5th 1, something along those lines. I've always felt 1st should be worth considerably more than 2nd. After all, you won the competition. That way each game ultimately gets weighed the same, and the place you end up, however it's decided, makes an equal impact. So if you play NBA Jam bracket-style, the ranks are easy to come up with. Same with timed games.

Let us know how it goes.

The scoring system you mentioned seems good. I'll do something to that effect.
I have access to any of the main consoles that were released. Any game I don't have I'm going to pick up.

The biggest issue I'm running into with the Sports, fighting and FPS games is time required to finish a mini tourney.

Going over possible games we've locked down most of them.
If we have another tourney down the road the others will get their chance (Halo, Crusin USA, Sonic)

FPS:
Goldeneye
Not sure How I'm going to throw a mini tourney. It wont be LTK
Most likely Rounds and names in hat.
Each Round will be played on a certain map.
Round 1
Pick 4, they play free for all
1st and 2nd move on to 2nd round.
Do this with the remaining names cutting the competition in half.
Round 2
Rinse and Repeat for as many rounds needed

Keep going till there is a final 4 players.
That's the championship match.

Racing:
Mario Kart 64
It will be running on it's own TV so people waiting their turn in other games can just make their score at their leisure
Time Trials. Each player races 3 laps on 3 diff maps. Best lap from each map is added together. Quickest time takes it.

Sports:
NBA Jam Series (Either Hang time for 64 or Jam)
Might do name in hat Brackets. Each game will take the longest for the amount of players playing
(1 on 1)

Arcade:
Pac-Man Championship addition
It will be running on it's own TV so people waiting their turn in other games can just make their score at their leisure
High Score

Classic
Super Mario Lost Levels
Also on it's own TV We're working out the scoring system. Leaning towards Speed running.

Fighting
Some version of Street Fighter 2
Mortal Kombat 3 is still trying to make a bid by a few people but I'm pretty sure It'll be Ryu and the crew.
Depending on the turn out this will be either everyone plays everyone once in a best of 3
or
Split into Pool A and B. Play everyone in those pools then top 2 of each pool get placed in brackets.

There's my Facebook event picture for my friends.
I wish I had time to do capture of the different games and put a trailer together.

Re: Bday Retro gaming tourney help. Best 3 Mario kart 64 Levels?

I'm looking for the best 3 Mario Kart 64 levels. They're fun, challenging, and don't have any major unintended shortcuts.

I always liked DK's Jungle, Koopa beach, and bowser's castle. Wario's stadium is probably the longest course so maybe that's worth something. Rainbow road is long too but it has that massive shortcut for people who know how to pull it off. Royal raceway was always cool too because of the big jump and the fact that you could go up to the castle from mario 64.

There's a glitch on Mario Kart 64 with 3 players and Moo Moo Farm that speeds up the game big-time.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I heard that Wario's Stadium has a unintentional shortcut. Anyone confirm?
