How long will cd's last?

I've said it once and I'll say it again, someone (Or us) should manufacture a hard drive attachment that can connect to the CD driveconnection inside of older CD based systems like the PS1, Sega CD, Saturn, etc... and act as if it were the CD drive and load up games such as HD Loader for the PS2.

Seriously, that would be an awesome and instantaneous purchase for me, especially with the ability to upgrade the HDD and choose between different interface formats such as SATA, good old IDE or future interface standards.

Now let's get cracking on it!

HDAdvance/HDLoader capabiliy for PS1 or modded to work on PS2 internal drive. Just think of all those 700mb discs packed on a Hard drive. Now that would be a huge convenient library of menu driven games! I'm right behind you Mod_Man in the purchase line!

That's not exactly what I meant.

I mean a hard drive attachment for older consoles such as the Saturn, PS1, Sega CD or a multitude of other consoles as the CD drives begin failing from age. Sadly it's literally impossible to run PS1 games via the PS2's HDD since the PS1 processor inside the PS2 acts as the I/O processor for the PS2's HDD when in PS2 mode and once in PS2 mode the PS1 portion of the PS2 cannot be activated.

I have read somewhere that somebody did get a Hard drive to work through serial port of the Dreamcast though not that well.

Haha, yeah.

I remember hearing about that a long way back along with a way to boot games off of an SD card, but for the moment it requires a CD to boot the necessary drivers. So at least there's hope of a disc-less version of the DC for future generations!

here is an article about disc rot. the article isn't about what it is, but more about the prevalence of it. the writer makes it sound like it is EVERYWHERE. from the comments users posted it sounds like the dreamcast is really infected with it.

one comment suggests that over 10-15% of all saturn, 3do, sega cd, etc have disc rot. but i don't know how much stock i would put with those figures. he even said blue ray disc rot is already out there.

i have a flawless silpheed cd that NEVER loaded past the 3rd level. i just checked the disc and it has 3 clear as day spots. son of a bitch.

It can happen but a very slim chance. More likely discs will be damaged through fragile label side with a scratch. Thin paint coating of label side can be easily scratched into the reflective aluminum "pits" underneath. Pretty obvious since paint can't rot on a protected disc. The "Laser Rot Legend" is predominately on older video Laser Discs. Two halves glued together would have trapped coolant from manufacturing process resulting in internal corrosion of the reflective aluminum.

so you are not buying into the the whole disc rot thing?

if i remember correctly, somebody posted in a thread - i forget which one - a diagram of a cd and stated it is basically impossible to scratch a cd's information from the label side.

CRTGAMER is correct. The label side is where the information is stored. If you scratch the bottom of a disc, you have a chance to resurface it and might come out alright. If you scratch the label side, it's done for.

That blog is an incorrect amateurish sham.

He's not describing bit-rot at all, he's describing discs that have been treated like crap then resurfaced and resold. The top layer as has already been mentioned is the data layer. If you had bit rot then there would be discoloration and rust on your disc's silver bottom, not pockmarked holes on the top.

I have burnt CDs that are well over 10 years old that are still in working order.
