Everybody has been with a PS2 at some point and it's only about $10 bucks on average for a game in the used bin.
I'm still a PS2 virgin... and I just turned 25 :o

I'm sorry, you're really missing out on a great console. If you get some spare cash and are interested in finding a relatively cheap console with an enormous library that's strong in just about every genre, you should definitely look into picking one up.

Sony pushing Blu Ray is another thing that hurt them. Now, I personally love my games on Blu Ray; it saves me from having to disc swap, which had already been eliminated during the PS2 years. Yeah, it's fine when it's a one time thing, but Star Ocean 4 massively dropped the ball there. However, by moving to Blu Ray they jacked up the price of their system, which, as already mentioned, really hurt their sales. Plus, they did not have a killer app at launch that would convince people to buy the PS3 over the established 360. Sony forgot the big difference between DVDs and Blu Rays. The switch from VHS to DVD was HUGE from a customer usability and functionality standpoint, similar to the change between cassette and CD. When I bought a new DVD I had chapter skip, no rewinding, and special features like deleted scenes and commentary. With Blu Ray I have better picture quality and twice the price. Oh, and I don't notice the picture quality unless I have a nice AV setup.

Bluray just isn't a big enough leap in terms of quality. A decent upscaling DVD player coupled with a decent upscaling plasma TV (IE Panasonic Viera) will give pretty comparable results in quality. Half the time I have a trouble getting over the digital crisp-ness of bluray, it seems too detailed at times and tends to detract from the movie somewhat. Then you get a bluray like This Is It which has about 40% SD scenes in it, I was fucking appalled at that. It was a gift for my birthday from my fiancée but I seriously think that if you are paying a premium for bluray and then the bluray isn't 100% HD and what isn't HD looks like crap, I might as well have just gone for the damn DVD, I might have had better quality overall. Ridiculous.

Blu-Ray miss of not including that spare DVD disc for the bedroom/car DVD player. Most of the Toshiba HD-DVD movies came with that extra DVD.

Sony stating optional position of PS3 Tower or Desktop leading to possible increase of overheating YLOD failures.

As Niode pointed out Here Tower upright mode blocks off some of the air circulation.

the following points:

*$600 (although its below average price for a new console here, like a bargain)
*Bluray, is not standard why jump ship?
*360 is cheaper and capable of putting out the same games
*1 year later into the console war
*No games, while 360 was pushing Gears of War!
*No BC
*Sony lying that their console is out of this world, bunch of crap cell processor and more
*Online gameplay was not as good as it is today, 360 was almost perfect

Basically if ps3 was $300, had proper online gameplay , and only few of the exclusive games on launch year like Metal Gear or LittleBigPlanet then 360 would be with no user base, because all of them sent their 360's to fix due to RROD's and went on to buy a ps3.

They have pissed off people with some things but some of the stuff posted here is pure fanboy fantasy.

Most people who have a Ps3 will have the complete opposite views of whats been posted.

We can judge what the mistakes were made with PS3 when the next gen comes out.

The pspgo on the other hand I dont think we have to wait for

You'd be surprised; many of the people who've posted in this thread are PS3 owners. Hell, the only 360 games I have are exclusives. I still think the PS3 was mishandled.

Another thing that hurt Sony is that many of their exclusives went to Microsoft while they still retained theirs; Final Fantasy, Tekken, Metal Gear, etc.

Yeah, I'm in this camp too: 80% or more of my 360 games are exclusives, and frankly many of them are not even close to my favorite games from this generation. On the other hand, for me, the Sony exclusives have been MUCH stronger and well worth the price of admission (even if you paid $600!)

And though I love my PS3, there's no doubt that Sony has made some mistakes along the way from a business/marketing perspective. Still, when I bought it a couple of years ago for $300 ($400 minus an additional $100 coupon), I was satisfied to get a reliable HD game system with games that I was interested in, an excellent Blu-Ray player (I strongly disagree with the Blu-Ray criticisms in the thread so far), and lots of other features that would have cost extra on the 360 for about the same price (e.g. multiplayer and Wi-Fi). Now that they are marketing these things better and dropped the price, they are gaining ground. Perhaps they learned from their mistakes.

I don't think Sony did anything wrong, I think short-sighted consumers lacked the foresight to see that PS3 was ultimately the better value.

Everyone has the mentality that XBOX 360 is the cheaper system, but once you account that all accessories are super proprietary, XBOX Live is a subscription service, Wi-Fi adapters are $100 (WHAT THE FUCKING SHIT!), the hardware is total junk quality through and through (and having fixed over 100 360s myself, I feel qualified to speak on the matter), etc. etc.

If you add the price of the base hardware, the online play, controllers (adding the fact PS3 can use USB controllers and your old PS2 controllers with a $5 adapter), Wi-Fi compatibility, a hard drive (PS3 can be upgraded with any off-the-shelf drive, 360 can't), and everything else you need to get the system up and running the way most people want/need it to, the PS3 total comes out cheaper.

All I can say is IMO PS3 beats the 360 in every way possible. The only thing PS3 lacks is the size of the library, but that's solely the fault of the fact that everyone jumped on the 360 bandwagon instead of the vastly superior PS3. Some people complain about the PS2 controller and the placement of the joystick, but am I alone in preferring my thumbs to be places symmetrically rather than being staggered like the XBOX 360 controller? If you just don't like the nitty gritty details of the PS3 controller, just get a Logitech pad, they're the effing shit and they don't have anything for 360 because Microsoft is a total dick with 3rd party licensing.

Best of all, that pad is good for 300 hours between battery changes, no more of that constant charging.

Oh, and I'm not a "PS3 fanboy" either, I don't own a PS3 or XBOX 360, I made the worst mistake of my life and bought a Wii, and that piece of shit is what made me start retro collecting while I waited for the PS3 to amass enough games to make it worth my while.
