odd a/v switch issue

Post by AppleQueso »

I bought an a/v switch the other day, one that has automatic switching and a built in RF modulator. It has 4 inputs, 3 of which have S-Video, and two outputs.

It works fine as far as switching goes, but I'm having a weird problem. Whenever anything needs to go to black (say a fade out or something, or when you first turn on a ps2), it instead shows a grey color that fades slowly to the proper shade of black. While I've had something similar happen when using my computer through S-Video on the TV, it only did that when first starting the computer.

I've tried both outputs, and a few other configurations, and it seems that the problem goes away for the most part when I hook up the a/v switch through composite instead of s-video. Although my game systems that are currently hooked into the switch are hooked up via composite, I'd rather use s-video for obvious reasons.

Obviously this is a problem with the a/v switch, but I'd rather not take it back as I picked it up used and would rather try to fix the problem if it's at all fixable. Can anybody give me some clues here?

Does the S-Video direct to TV give you that same fade results? Or just from the video switch box. Part number off of that box will help in trouble shooting.

Like I said, a similar issue happens when I plug my computer into the s-video slot, on the TV without the switchbox that is.

this is the switchbox.

I've found a lot of those auto-switching AV boxes are just plain crap. They have terrible video bleed, and the more stuff you plug into them the worse the problem gets. I'd avoid them and stick to a standard manual switch box.

With that auto-switching seems video signal is split to both TV input and auto switch sensor. Kinda falls in line of the bleed over Niode mentioned above. My Atari 5200 has auto switch sensor power lead, but only dealing with RF which is a fuzzy un-delight anyways.

Well, apparnetly my weird fading issue is happening even without using that switch. I picked up a manual switchbox, and notice that I still get this issue. I get it when plugging my game systems directly into my tv as well.

I've kinda tried to ignore it, because when this isn't happening the picture quality is SUPERB, but I'd really like to be able to figure out what's going on and fix it if possible.

Possibly the contacts where the cable plugs into the PS2? Another cable to confirm?

I've got an s-video cable for my ps3, as well as a multi-input cable for n64/psx. Both cables give the same issue.

I'm thinking the issue has got to be with the tv's s-video input or something.

Ouch. Just the one S-Video input or other S-Video inputs too? If widescreen LCD could be a scaling issue.
For the PS3 go with HDMI. PS2 hookup component cables, might as well get 480p outta that one.

TV make and model number?

the TV isn't HD, is 4:3 and it's only got one s-video input. It's bugging me enough that I'm considering just getting a new TV altogether sometime

The model is a Sanyo DS32225. It was given to me as a freebie.
