if you've had multiple YLOD, it could be that you're not giving it enough breathing room/not keeping the fan and vent holes clean enough. XBOX 360 and PS3 are on a completely other level when it comes to cooling necessity, if you put it in an entertainment center or let pet hair/dust/dirt build up on the cooling vents and fan blades, it's going to overhead and die. RROD on older 360s (at least for sure the older ones, though I don't know if the newer ones are actually RROD proof or not) is almost avoidable no matter what you do, but PS3 seems to be more dependent on the user than just a universal unavoidable failure.

Also, if we talk durability from more than just a heat stand-point...

I was playing MAG one night - getting really into it. My cat walks on to the desk where my PS3 Slim is and knocks it down. It fell a long way, while a game was in and active. I thought this would be a kiss of death at first...

Except that my game kept going. Not even any audio/video weirdness - it was operating as if nothing happened. After I finished the match, I ejected the disc, and it still looked like it was brand new.

Sorry, just wanted to tell that story.
Glad your Slim survived the prowls of your evil cat. Bet the cat didn't stick around to explain after it heard that crash!

Imagine the story on that one to Sony, "really the dog ate my homework" ........

Got a confirmation E-Mail from UPS. Sony sending a new empty shipping box free to put my next Brick in.

I still have Modern Warfare 2 stuck in it, been hitting eject, power on/off combo moves like Street Fighter trying to get it out. I admit I do suck at fighting games. Sony assured me I would get the disc back along with replacement PS3.

Wait a minute, They also assured my current YLOD would work with no further problems.

At least still in warranty, just PS3 withdrawal for my son. He borrowed a 360 from a very good friend to hold over until replacement PS3 arrives.

Niode, you're right about the 360 too. Again right on the "Bottom" in Tower mode more air holes that would have been covered. Those silly little rubber feet won't give enough breathing room.

Help me I can't breathe! ......... Me neither!

Small update.
This time UPS turnaround time at the Texas Repair Center took 12 hours instead of an immediate exchange like the first repair. Good indicator technician took the time to get the stuck disc out. Son was panicking. its Warfare 2. Also like last time, the replacement is taking the scenic trip back. I live on the West Coast, Sony Service Center is in Texas and now replacement PS3 is in Kentucky!

Hope you get your disc back in the same condition that it went in! BDs are pretty robust though, thankfully.

too bad consoles can't be opened easily to remove the dust like a pc

Well, no they can't but you can still take preventative measures, by cleaning it often. Most people just don't clean their consoles, and they wonder why they fail? After the warranty is over you don't really have an excuse. It's simple to open a 360, PS3 or Wii (yes the Wii overheats too and it's a common problem) just google the instructions there's plenty of websites documenting the process.

Okay its here! Received yet another 4 USB 60gb Emotion Chip PS3 on an even (under warranty) exchange. Stuck disc got returned in a paper sleeve disc jacket, taped in a safe spot inside the shipping box. PS3 again has a shiny new Factory Shell with protective saran wrap plastic. PS2 Metal Gear 3 compatibility test worked fine. Son back to playing Warfare 2 online. By "Niode's recommendation this PS3 is staying flat in Desktop mode. Optimistic this one will last.

Well at less then a month and yet another YLOD on my son's Fat 6ogb PS3. Yes, its well ventilated and sitting flat as a desktop.

Still in warranty so here I go again on number three even exchange. I asked if I could simply get a slim instead, no luck so expect to again to get a Fat Emotion PS2 chip 60gb unit. Already own two PS2s so Emotion chip is moot at this stage when PS2 Slim seems more reliable. At least no charge, its in the 90 day window a 90 day wonder.

The way this is going, my Son's kill rate is on PS3s, should get Special Trophys.
At least the Frequent Flyer miles awarded from all the package shipping.

Last time Modern Warfare was stuck and got returned with the even exchange. Sony promises to return again with the 60gb replacement.
The one plus of all this is the Son will have to stop hibernating for a while, maybe see the sun and get some vitamin D.
