How long will cd's last?
How long will cd's last?
Hey guys.
simple question, how long do you think Playstation discs' will last?
Reason i ask is because i've got quite a large collection, and m worrried that in 20 years time, they will not work!

they'll last longer than the drive motor on your ps1/2 at least as long as you take care of them... possibly even outlive you.

As long as there wasn't an error in making them where they're gas permeable and thus in danger of bit rot, quite a long time if they're taken care of.

That's comforting to hear, since I have a lot of PC games I don't want to have to re-buy in the future. Besides, physical media>downloads and other stuff like that.Hobie-wan wrote:As long as there wasn't an error in making them where they're gas permeable and thus in danger of bit rot, quite a long time if they're taken care of.

If you owned the original CD's aka billy joel's 52nd street. I believe that is the first CD to ever come out. Those are defective (well some are anyways), and were experiencing CD rot. They figured out how to manufacture them better shortly after. Shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Re: How long will cd's last?
Isnt this question kinda like asking how long the sun will burn? I know I run across it ALL over google all the time. I think its flipping a coin honestly and all depends on luck. I have seen MINT like NEW xbox 360 games not even work and took them back to have them exchanged the same day, to then have the game work perfectly. Its all in printing I suspose.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

As others have said, as long as the seal is good between the layers (and I think all modern discs are, calling modern about 1990 onward), it should work forever. The materials involved are all extremely non-biodegradable, so they should probably outlast you. The biggest concern is keeping it scratch free as repeated resurfacings could eventually render it unreadable.

I'd be much more worried about the PS1 lasting, the disc will far out live the console.
Re: How long will cd's last?
Pity the same cannot be said for burned media. You'll have to "refresh" your optical media backups every few years to guarantee the dye won't, er.. die! Hopefully DVD±R will prove more durable than CD-R.
