Japanese Mega CD AC Adaptor?

Post by Kyle15 »

I just got a Japanese Mega CD 1 and it doesn't seem to work with the cord I use on my American Mega CD. Numerous sources told me that a Genesis would work just fine with a Japanese MCD, so I don't think that's the issue here.

Just to note, the system seems to make a few....grinding noises after powering on. The lights do not flash or stay lit, however.

Are you using the Mega CD with a Japanese Mega Drive?

Also, grinding noises are generally bad. Did you buy a dud?

I tried it with a Genesis one and two. After having zero success, I decided to open it up. Everything looks absolutely brand-new inside. Even down to the copy of Silpheed in the disc tray, which I JUST WON on eBay to play on this thing!
What luck.

I'm the guy from Digital Press too, if you're wondering. Posted there as well but figured a response would come quicker by posting here.

Ahhh...

I haven't had a chance to test a MD with a Genesis PSU, vice-versa, or with the CD add-ons yet, and won't for about a couple months still. Check the specs on the back of the AC adapters, but I'm pretty sure they're the same (other than the 100V/115V difference). If they are about the same (make sure the polarity matches), they should definitely work.

Other than that, I don't know what do tell you as I haven't tested anything like this yet.

The cord in question is for a Genesis 1, but it functions fine with my American MCD.
Can't recall what the voltage is and what not at the moment, but I assume its the regular.

Anyway, thanks for letting me know. Looks like the system is either broken, or just can't be read by both of my Genesis models. :|

:?: There's no such thing as an American Mega CD. You mean the Sega CD? The Genesis 1 and Mega CD 1 and 2 AC adapters are exactly the same.

NEVER assume when it comes to power supply unit. That is how you destroy systems.

Look at the Mega CD and check the power requirements. Compare to the Genesis PSU.

The Mega CD being incompatible with the Genesis is a definite possibility, although I really don't know for sure.

I mentioned "American Mega CD" because when it comes down to it, the Sega CD is a Mega CD. Different region chips, but same systems. My nerdery leads to me obsessively calling things by their "original" names. I call MegaMan "RockMan" for example.

When I said "assume is was the regular" I mean that it was the standard for American Genesis systems. It came with my Genesis 1.

Let's see....my Genesis adaptor has its power data on the bottom. The MCD just has a "for use only with" description with a model number. The other number it lists is nowhere to be found on the power cord.

Yeah, I wondered that... but we are talking about both Sega CDs, Mega CDs and Mega Drives and Genesis'. Might as well use the original (ie. the Genesis was never called "American Mega Drive") names to avoid confusion here. :)

What do you call The Legend of Zelda or Fatal Fury?

Yeah, I got you... but again, best be very specific here.

I just checked the bottom of a Mega Drive and it only lists the model number for the official PSU (that's power supply unit or AC adapter. Don't say "power cord" or that just gets more confusing! Actually, AC adapter isn't even a good thing to say as you might actually be referring to DC. It is semantics, but it's important semantics because this is the very thing that leads someone to blowing their system). Like I said earlier, I'm pretty sure the Japanese MD and M-CD PSUs are the same as the Genesis and Sega CD PSUs*.

Anyway, at this point I can't really help you anymore than a Google search would do, as I won't have first-hand experience with this for another few months. Best of luck!

*The Japanese model 1 Mega Drive and both model 1 and 2 Mega CD systems use the same PSU. The model 2 Mega Drive uses a different one. Likewise with the Genesis/Sega CD counterparts.
Also, the Japanese Game Gear uses the Mega Drive model 1 PSU, while the American Game Gear uses the Genesis model 2 PSU. This makes for a very confusing situation. Be glad you aren't dealing with NEC PSUs... they are even worse!
