Re: .RAR file question
I agree with 7-zip.
While we're on the topic of compression... how do some files get a higher compression ratio than others? I've had 200mb files compressed to 20mb. These have been archives that I've gotten from other places, though. When I try to compress files, even with the "best" compression setting, they don't achieve anywhere near that kind of ratio.

Re: .RAR file question
Jpegs are already compressed with a similiar scheme to the ones used by Zip and such, so they will not get smaller. Text files however will really compress down. It just depends on what kind of data it is.thekorean12 wrote:I agree with 7-zip.

Re: .RAR file question
Yeah, stick with WinRAR. Considering the fact that you can use it into oblivion even after the evaluation period is over, I see no reason to get rid of it.
It kind of sucks, but you're probably better off using 7-zip only for 7z files and WinRAR only for RAR files and so on, just to be sure you won't end up with corrupted files when you extract (unless the file itself was already corrupt, of course).

Re: .RAR file question
I use WinRAR through Total Commander's shell for RAR files (use them like directories), but for other files I use Universal Extractor
http://legroom.net/software/uniextract
It can extract more types of files than any other program I've ever found, even installation executables, Mac Stuffit files and most ISO formats. Check the list at the bottom of the page.
