Can I use japanese games on an american gameboy without any type of modding?

Yes, all GB, GBC, GBA's are region-free.

Yep, the Gameboy models are region free. You should be able to play both Japanese and US carts with no problem.

when I was in like 5th grade, I had SaGa 2. I had NO IDEA what was going on it. But I thought I was awesome for having it.
