Have an old G3 iMac? Got Kids?

Well, this is very interesting to hear...

I know OS8-9 wasn't that stable, but if t was worse than '98 and more expensive as you say, why did people still buy Apple products, in fact Apple started to flourish with the os 8 and 9 era. Why would people leave more stable win98 and cheaper hardware for Apple's bad os 8 and more expensive hardware.

I don't want to debate, I don't know that much.
But I lived my whole life knowing that win98 is the worst OS , only win2000 or ME, I forgot, was worse.

OS9 pretty good but OSX was Apple's best move. With older version OSX you can keep OS9 as a dual boot for all the programs. I run Tiger OSX/OS9 on an iMac G3, still humming along browsing.

Ever notice every new operating System becomes more featured and bloated requiring faster computer. I think its a marketing ploy Hardware vs Software. Consumer keeps buying.

Also Microsoft tends to release new operating systems in increments.
DOS 6.0 - Buggy...........Dos 6.22 - More stable with great Memmaker
Win3.1 - Buggy.............Win3.11 Workgroups - More stable
Win 95 - Buggy.............Win98 - More stable
WinMe - Buggy.............WinXP - More stable
WinVista - Buggy..........Win7 - More stable

With this cycle when the next Win operating system comes out, If you want more bloat, at least wait for its second phase.

On my PC I have Four removable Hard Drives.

1. Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.11 Workgroups (Love Dos for older games, Hate this Windows)
2. Windows 98SE (This literally flys, compared to XP. Really not too many problems.)
3. Windows XP Pro (Little slower but rated more stable, and supports newer programs.)
4. Windows XP Home (Wife's original stuffed with Excel files, Don't touch!)

As for Windows 7, no thanks it needs to lose some serious weight. Son uses that one on his Laptop.

WinMe - Buggy.............WinXP - More stable

WinME is part of the 9x line. It's still DOS underneath. That's why ME was so egregious, it was a regression of a mostly workable OS. Win2K would be a better comparison to XP, both use the NT kernel.

BTW, how does DOS run on relatively modern hardware? Do you run into problems with drivers, etc? Personally, I just use DOSBOX. You can even run 3.11 on it.

Boy this topic has really digressed from it's original topic. Getting back to that, I'm suprised it's so hard to get Linux to run on an old Imac. Sounds like an interesting challenge if I ever find one for $10 I'll give it a go.

You're right this has really gone into a deep Tangent.

I know about partitions, tricky from my range of Operating systems especially (don't laugh) maintaining DOS. The Wife would kill me if I wiped out her work drive with all the Excel files. Besides game compatibility better on the DOS 6.22 removable drive vs DOS Box. Of course now have to use MOSLO on those older games, a few such as Pyrotechnica still zip by fast.



Anyways to try to get back on track, I primarily use my G3 for Internet reading boards such as now. Great Retro Machine!
