What Languages Can You Speak?
Re: What Languages Can You Speak?
I minored in Spanish in college but have not practiced in a couple years so I could probably only have a very limited conversation if needed. Need to brush up.
I am in the process of learning Koine Greek, the language the New Testament was written in. It's tough, but enjoyable for the most part. One good thing that makes it easier to learn is that you only have to translate one way since translating from English to Koine Greek would be a pointless task.

My first language is Slovak, so here is my Slovak review for Super Castlevania IV I wrote a few years ago
http://www.sector.sk/uzivatelrecenzia/2 ... nia_iv.htm
I can also speak and write English, but I make some mistakes, mostly concerning articles. I do have accent as well, but at least people understand me and I can understand other people too...more or less
Even though I have been studying German for much more than English, I could hardly speak or understand it - there just wasn't something, that would motivate me to learn it. So here is something I can write in it
Guten Tag. Ich habe eine Badewanne.

Well, let's try it :Hateshinai wrote:I would say that I know 4 languages well: Polish, Italian, English, Maltese and I have a decent grasp of one more (French). I can also understand about half a dozen others to various degrees but not enough to claim that I know them.
Let's see. I was born in Poland so I speak Polish. I moved to Malta where I had to learn English and I had to study Italian and French for 5 years. After which I forgot most of my French.![]()
I never officially studied Maltese but I kind of picked it up by diffusion so now I can understand it almost perfectly even though when I speak I make mistakes. Great language to swear in, by the way.
I am teaching myself Japanese from CDs but I'm far from great.
I can understand several languages which are related to the ones I know, to various degrees, as long as people speak slowly. So I can understand when someone speaks to me in Slovak (very similar to Polish) and pick up bits and pieces of Czech and Russian (love the sound of Russian). Similarly with Spanish (Italian-like) and certain Arabic dialects (Maltese is derived from Arabic, amongst others).
I would say that I know 4 languages well: Polish, Italian, English, Malteseand I have a decent grasp of one more (French).
Ktorá konzola bola tvoja prvá? A ktorú si si kúpil ako poslednú? Raz by som si tiež chcel kúpiť PC Engine, minimálne kvôli Castlevanii...čo hovoríš, oplatí sa to? A plánuješ si v blízkej dobe ešte nejakú konzolu kúpiť? Inak už neviem, čo by som ti povedal, akurát pekný deň a zahraj si Castlevaniu, keď už ja nemôžem

It would be much easier if I could hear you talk and even better see you (body language helps to a degree most people don't appreciate). I am trying to vocalize what you wrote so that I can understand but I don't nit familiar with the writing so bear with me. I will answer in English.deathclaw wrote: Well, let's try it :

Ahem...
"My first console was a Gameboy. My latest is a PC Engine. Yes, the PC Engine is worth it, even though you will need to buy the CD attachment for Castlevania. I am planning to buy a Playstation 1. In fact I have to meet a guy about it in 2 hours time. It's a nice day here too.
I didn't quite get the last part of what you wrote: between not knowing what else to say/nice day and your inability to play Castlevania.
How did I do?

Re: What Languages Can You Speak?
I put myself as trilingual but I feel more 2.5 lingual.
My first language is English, follwed by Japanese, and fragments of Spanish I can't forget no matter how long it's been since I studied it in school.
I'm nowhere near fluent in Japanese, but I can use it for work. That's fine by me.

Re: What Languages Can You Speak?
And by the way, I fully understand Czech language, since it's really simmilar to Slovak
I would say the difference between Slovak and Czech is as big as between American and British English
I talk and chat with Czechs on the internet and mostly I don't even think about it

Re: What Languages Can You Speak?
Decently fluent in: English, Spanish, Irish Gaelic
Working on: French, German
Was tought Irish Gaelic when I was a little kid by my mother. Though a dead language, apparently I picked it up faster than English and was technically my first language. Pretty cool eh?
ca a bheith in ann póg mo thóin!
You can kiss my ass!

Older. Not wiser.
Re: What Languages Can You Speak?
Let's see:
4 years of French, can barely hold a conversation. But, I can go to a French restaurant and speak nothing but French (albeit poorly) and get by.
4 years of Spanish, can kind of hold a discussion. Can also hold my own in a Mexican restaurant.
5 semesters of German, you don't use it, you lose it.
My English is close to perfect, which is difficult to maintain in NC. It really seems 75% of the people in this state have no sense of grammar and proper English. Even intelligent people use poor grammar and it seems acceptable.
