Look out for a save glitch in the GBA version. It has something to do with the music looping and if you try to save at that time it will freeze. It bit me twice today. I have been saving as soon as I hit a new area (when the music starts) and it has been fine since.

I haven't heard of that. But I've generally been saving when entering a new area, or when I've leveled up.

has anyone else made it up to Dr. Mad yet? The part where he wants to kill the cat? Luckily I saved right outside his cave. He kicks my ass FAST every time. Is there any secret weakness or anything? Or do I need to just go level up some more?

I just started playing this today. This will be the first time I participate in Together Retro. The first 5 levels are extremely tedious in this game. I hope the game makes up for this later. I'm going to try to play without any maps, but we'll see how long that lasts.

If anyone is interested in reading the original Master System instruction book, it is available at replacement docs.

I looks like I'm going to be able to do a podcast dedicated to the game - any questions you want me to ask those who might have answers (about the game or the series)?

So I chose to play my GBA version on the GBA SP+. So far I am about 3 hours in or so. I just rescued Odin and now we are going to go explore another cave. I am pretty pleased with the game so far and am quite shocked at how advanced it is for its time. I played Dragon Quest 1 and Final Fantasy 1 when they were released here in the U.S. but this game seems to best each of them in different ways.

Compared to Dragon Quest 1 this game has animated enemies, multiple enemies, and multiple party members. Not sure how the original saved since I have the GBA version but the ability to save anywhere instead of at the king is awesome.

Compared to Final Fantasy 1 this game has an actual plot to the story with deaths and cutscenes (which Final Fantasy came to be known for in later installments). Also this game has a first person view in the dungeons, which while primitive today, must have blown gamers minds back in 1988.

I think this game was extremely advanced for its time, much more so than FF1 and DQ1 which actually came out later in the states. It definitely didn't get its due because of being on the Master System at the time when everyone owned a Nintendo instead. And you gotta love that toe-tapping overworld music!

Whoo. Sounds like fun. I've been looking for something to play in between Heavy Rain (which I devoured) and FFXIII and this sounds like a lot of fun. I'm semi-familiar with the Phantasy Star series but since I grew up a Nintendo kid I never got the chance to really experience them.

I'll be playing the Sega Genesis Collection version. Cheers! :)

I agree with all this. And likewise, I had FF1 and DW1 when they were first released in the States.
