Anyone ever swap PS3 drive?

Post by wclem »

Ok, this may have been adressed, sorry if this topic is a dupe. My question is: Has anyone tried swapping out a larger drive in a fat PS3. I have a forty gig and have been thinking about trying this. I was hoping someone here may have done it or knows how or even knows a good resource of information on it.

I have done a little searching and found some stuff, but most of it is so badly written as not to be worth the effort to read. Alas, though, my patience can be thin at times so I may have overlooked a great source.

Any input would be sweet, thanks guys.

No, but I have swapped a friends for him, and plan to do mine soon (gonna put a 250gb in it). It's really simple, remove the panel on the left side (or vertical bottom) of the PS3, remove a screw, remove another 4 screws, put the new drive in, then done.

Good luck. And be careful, when I tried to do it, I ended up ripping the ribbon cable and turning my launch model PS3 into a launch model brick. Try not to do that. Otherwise, you should be fine.

No it was the ribbon that connected the drive to the system, so the system can read the drive. According to the repair guy, that couldn't be repaired. I know there's another ribbon that connects the motherboard to the Blu-Ray drive itself, and that can be repaired, but the two giant cables can't.

EDIT: I JUST now realized we were talking about the Hard Drive, and not the Blu-Ray Drive. EPIC N00B Mistake, sorry for doing that and making myself look like an idiot. Hard Drive is easy to install and re-install. Just a screwdriver and you're good to go, but I would back up my memory on an external HDD first.

There, n00b mistake hopefully fixed. Now I feel like an idiot.

Yup. It's incredibly easy. Heck, your PS3 manual that came with the system should tell you how to do it.

The hardest part is getting off that damn cover that goes over the drive bay. When I took mine off just to look and make sure I was remembering correctly, the thing flew off at a million miles an hour with the amount of force i had to use to get it to budge.

Anyway as far as cleaning your PS3, use Plexus, I just used it today and it made my PS3 and my iPhone look brand spanking new.

If you have a phat - then make sure that if you usa a sata II drive that you put the jumper on to make it SATA I only - this will stop the PS3 saying the correct hard drive is not in the slot.
